The film is adapted from a novel by a Russian poet. The entire Moscow set was set up outside Madrid; while the temporary hospital established by Zhivago and Nora during World War I, and Alexander Gromeko's ancestral home-"Varykino", were filmed in Soria. Since it is not possible to film the scene of the blizzard in Spain, part of the winter plot (mainly location) in the film and the scene where Zhivago escapes from the guerrillas were all shot in Finland. As for the plot of the Zhivago family taking a train to the Ulla Mountains, it was filmed in Canada
.
The "Ice Palace" in "Varykino" was also filmed in Soria, just filling the house with frozen beeswax. The scene of the guerrillas charging across the frozen lake was to place iron plates on a dry river bed and add marble powder as fake snow. Most of the winter scenes in the film were shot in a warm climate, and the temperature was 32 degrees Celsius for part of the time
