Mrs. America strikes an extreme balance. At a time when feminism is in the spotlight and social progress is inevitable, the show is full of parallels that cannot be ignored in the current political moment. The play is brisk but not stubborn, and the ideological consensus and differences are exceptionally coordinated between the second wave of feminism and the emerging moral majority movement that was brought into the political mainstream by Schlafly. At the same time, miniseries are better at humanizing historical characters, especially their doubts and vulnerabilities. In this sense, the show may be a rare historical drama more illuminating than a documentary on the same subject, bringing history to life with thoughtful, authentic detail.
