Spoel was born in Battersea, London, the third of four children. His father Joe works at the post office, and his mother Sylvia is a hairdresser . He received performance training at the National Youth Theatre and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). His brother Matthew is a contract director of the computer company Morpheme.
