Saw Mulholland Drive - Amnesia Avenue last week and loved it.
Then retrieve the director "David Lynch-David Lynch" old works. (Chinese translation: David Woodland / David Lynch / David Lianzhi)

1980 The Elephant Man

"The Elephant Man" is a film based on a true story. The era is the 1880s.
A man's appearance is very ugly, so ugly that everyone is afraid of it. If you meet him when you are not mentally prepared, it will make people scream.
So people call him "the elephant man".

As you can imagine, this is so ugly as an elephant, and his life is not under his control.
Everyone hated him, including his family.
So he can only work as a performer and let anyone visit this monster.
Outside of work, he was either teased or beaten by others.

Then, Elephant Man met a kind-hearted doctor. He saw that Elephant Man was treated like this, and hoped to take him to another life elsewhere.

The story goes on like this....

I love this movie.

Inheriting the mantle of German expressionism, the warmth that is rarely seen in the film after the noir shows. The film techniques and styles after Lynch can find their source in this film. The character's movement and framing composition can see Dreyer's legacy, which is very interesting. The soundtrack has a coquettish style throughout. If it weren't for Lynch's film, I would probably think it's more like Tim Burton's work.

The first session of the Suzhou Art Association Restoration Film Festival. Black and white images have a feeling of the old times, when human technology has advanced to have machines and trains; but in an era that is far from gender and racial equality, the existence of the elephant Merrick has tortured everyone's conscience. Emotional man rather than a circus animal, yet too few people in that era treated him with kindness, even doctors, couples and actresses, only more kindly than others of the time. The nurse's response was more genuine, from resistance to love, and more compassion than doctors. I couldn't hold back my tears since Merrick and the doctor and his wife shared photos of each other and started to socialize with each other normally. The wiki has a real person, the circus experience is not much different from the film, but it is equally tragic, with a mild personality, not anti-social or anti-human.

The Elephant Man quotes

  • Dr. Fox: Have you ever mentioned his mental state?

Dr. Frederick Treves: Oh, he's an imbecile, probably from birth. Man's a complete idiot... Pray to God he's an idiot.

  • Plumed Dwarf: Luck, my friend, luck. Who needs it more than we?
