Our answer is the same

At first wanting to watch this movie was a desire for the aesthetics of weapon violence. Imagine seeing the cold launch of the submarine, or the heroic posture of the SS-20. But the director takes us in another direction; how do we view collectivist patriotic behavior?
As a student, a university student who is a bit biased towards scientific research, the deepest feeling may be the heavy sense of responsibility for his work. If we design a submarine for actual combat, do we dare to test its limits without hesitation like Alexis, and believe in its solidity?
During the Cold War, the Soviets had many technical problems of this kind in the military. The reason is nothing more than technological backwardness or blindly speeding up construction in violation of scientific conventions. The most typical example is the Soyuz One accident. It is the "touching" decimal point story written into elementary school textbooks, an aerospace tragedy that has been concealed by the general environment. Regarding the cccp Blizzard space shuttle, what can we do besides sighing? Maybe now only the lonely "rocket king" can understand the bitterness of Soviet scientists unattended. In order to catch up with the moon landing before the United States, so many outstanding astronauts were sacrificed forcibly ahead of the launch time. But who has thought about whose husband they are and whose son they are?
After all, human elites have become ideological pawns.
After watching this film, we must first ask, why does Captain Polenin faithfully execute Captain Vostrikov's orders? Why did the political commissar deprive Captain Vostrikov of his power, but Polenin arrested them?
I want to say that once a problem has been raised to the height of national interest, it cannot be discussed.
Just like Cheng Dieyi in "Farewell My Concubine", whether he is forced or not, he is treason. People naturally have the right to say that they have the right to "raise the muzzle 10cm" so that they can face their conscience.
But that is for others, for soldiers, life and the motherland will always be the motherland first. And life is always second, whether it is one's own or subordinates. Vostrikov always considers the motherland. Even if he asks for help from the US military, it is premised on destroying the submarine.
So it is not difficult for us to understand what Polenin's self-esteem is; “sacrifice yourself and your comrades for the motherland at any time.” So Vostrikov and Polenin are the same in terms of final heights. Although their debates over certain necessity are fierce, they do not hinder anything.
Both the East and the West do not have too many doubts on this issue. Our answer must be the same. It's just that this film was made by the Americans, so the Soviets will answer. If the Soviets are allowed to make a movie, the Americans can only answer like this movie.
Contradiction is just the contradiction between war and human nature, and it can never be accepted by everyone with peace of mind.
Another question about the movie is; why did the new reactor chief finally sacrifice himself to repair the reactor?
There is no better explanation than responsibility.
Widowmaker is a profound name. Many people died during construction, and many people died during sailing. The purpose of the submarine is to create more widows for the enemy when the enemy destroys the motherland. But everyone, both the Soviets and the Americans, tried their best to prevent this from happening. So why do we need widowmakers?
It can only be said that it is not to create more widows, but peace, which is the greatest compliment to the widow makers.

It is best to respect historical facts to shoot. Otherwise, I wouldn't know it happened. And it's quite impressive

At that time, watching those living beings go in and come out dying, it’s horrible.

K-19: The Widowmaker quotes

  • Vadim Radtchenko: [admiring the reactor] This is the future, Pavel. Cars that never need refueling. Free power for every family. Maybe even travel to the planets.

  • Suslov: In American propaganda you will see how everyone has a car, nice clothes, a nice apartment. But you will never see the truth behind this lie. You will not see police dogs attacking strikers and demonstrators for civil rights. You will not see the beggars on the streets, the homeless, the negro-shantytowns in the south. You will not see the warmongers who threaten the world with nuclear holocaust.
