Synopsis

Melanie (Jessica Tandy), a wealthy and often troubled girl , meets lawyer Mitch (Rod Taylor ) at a pet store .

In the face of Mitch's offending remarks, Melanie was not angry, but secretly recorded his license plate number and found out his residence through her father's relationship.

Because during a brief conversation at the pet store, Melanie learned that Mitch wanted to buy a pair of lovebirds for her sister .

So she bought two and gave them to him personally, wanting to surprise him.

But Mitch was not at home. He learned from neighbors that he would return to Bodega Bay to visit his mother and sister every weekend.

Although it was far away, the persistent Melanie decided to drive there.

Bodega Bay is a harbour town far from the city. Because the residents of the town are familiar with each other, Melanie easily found out Mitch's address.

After seeing Melanie, Mitch was very surprised, and he began to look at this caring girl again.

The second time the two met each other, they were very happy and had a good conversation, but an accident happened .

While on the boat, Melanie was attacked by seagulls and suffered a head injury.

Seeing this, Mitch strongly invited Melanie to stay for the weekend. First, she could have a good rest, and second, it happened to be his sister Kathy's birthday the next day.

In fact, when she saw Mitch for the first time, Melanie already fell in love with him, so there was no reason to refuse.

Unexpectedly, at Casey's birthday party, a group of seagulls attacked the guests and many people were injured.

Later, a flock of sparrows even broke into the home through the chimney.

Mitch really had no choice but to call the police, but when the police arrived, the sparrows had already dispersed. Who would believe that birds would attack people?

The weirdness didn't end there. The next day, a nearby farmer died at his home.

His eyes were pecked out, there were scars all over his body, and there were some bird corpses scattered around the body.

Why do birds suddenly attack humans? Everyone was puzzled. At this time, a group of crows gathered around Casey's school , and it seemed that they would attack humans at any time...

Video Analysis

Can not help but still have to admire, the great Hitchcock . This should be the tenth Hitchcock movie I recommend. The feeling I got in the process was that he never made a movie with the same style, and now many directors play what he plays leftovers. Split personality, voyeurism, emotional crisis, reincarnation, espionage war, one shot, 3D, homosexuality, dream analysis , and the apocalyptic catastrophe brought about by this "Birds", every time you watch one of his movies, let him One more point for greatness in my heart.

This is not to brag about how good this movie is, in my opinion, a lot of the footage is outdated now, and even I often feel "boring" in the process of watching it, but in the 60s, the lack of computers When special effects are used, it is really admirable to be able to make such a film of the type of apocalypse disaster and to be so realistic.

The discussion about human beings and nature has never stopped from beginning to end, including the new coronavirus that has not yet subsided. At first, it was considered to be a revenge from nature, but what I didn’t expect was that as far back as 1963 , Hitchcock took this as the theme to shoot such a work.

Let’s just say that humans, like animals, are products of this nature, but it’s clear that humans and animals today are not equal. This is a very interesting topic. As a powerhouse in nature, human beings began to destroy the ecological balance very early for their own interests, leading to the extinction of some creatures. Will the so-called retribution eventually come?

At the beginning of the film, it is mentioned that humans will keep birds in cages, and many birds have already become our meals, so birds have revenge on humans, they wantonly attack humans, and make humans pay for what they do , at the end of the film, the scene of birds occupying Bodega Bay is very shocking. They could have killed them all, but they didn't. They just seem to want to tell human beings that nature is a common territory for everyone, and you can't help but act recklessly.

I think the director's purpose of making such a movie is not to say that chickens, ducks and geese are all birds and we cannot eat such things. After all, if it is extended to the whole nature, there is nothing to eat, because the food chain itself is also maintaining the ecology Balance, especially the animals from the farm and the plants from the planting industry, these creatures that only exist because of human beings are for our consumption.

But should we be more restrained, such as those wild animals and plants, it stands to reason that in nature, they are equal to us, and we have no right to interfere with their lives, otherwise it will be too late to say anything until the day when nature retaliates .

When human beings keep destroying nature, one day nature will usher in the revenge of nature.

This one completely bowed down to Hitchcock. Only birds create an apocalyptic atmosphere, and the level of horror is close to horror at the end. The grand vision of driving to the bay and the birds pecking on the wood door all remind people of "The Shining" (opening and cutting the door). The opening dialogue (Miss Daniels invites you to return to the cage), the heroine's dress (canary's head + love bird coat) and the relationship between the two (love birds) all imply the ending. Spectator (the last drive away is like being temporarily released from a cage for a walk). The Rome incident and the phrase "all because of you" of the woman in the hotel also extended another image: birds are like rumors and violently hurt people (the scale upgrade model from single bird to flock of birds is especially suitable).

The protagonist has an Oedipus complex and is very likely to commit adultery with his mother and kill his father. The bird's attack target is the heroine and the mother's attack target.

The Birds quotes

  • Lydia Brenner: I'm not like this, you know. Not usually. I don't fuss and fret over my children.

  • Lydia Brenner: When Frank died... You see he understood the children, he really understood them. He had the knack of entering into their world, of becoming a part of them. That's a very rare talent.

    Melanie Daniels: Yes.

Lydia Brenner: Oh, I wish, I wish, I wish I could be that way.
