Some thoughts on the narrative style and emotional explosiveness of War Horse

I recently watched the movie "War Horse". First of all, I think it's a good movie. The pictures are intoxicatingly beautiful, the plot is tearful, and the editing and sound effects are impeccable. favorite. But for the narrative of the warhorse, I think this is the biggest failure of the film.
There are many movies that express the emotions of people and animals, such as "Guide Dog Q", "Ten Promises" and "Hachiko the Loyal Dog". These films are much stronger than War Horse in terms of emotional expression (the last 30 minutes of "Hachiko" were all crying). The story background of the theme of "War Horse" should be more able to strengthen the expression of human and animal emotions, but there are not many crying points in the war horse, and the emotional explosiveness is not strong. This has to do with the way it is told.
A novel in literature consists of a beginning, a development, a climax, and an ending. Each part has its own role. Beginning - explain the background without emotional foreshadowing. Development - the accumulation of emotions. Climax - A gathering of emotions. The ending - an emotional outburst. For the movie "The Thirteen Hairpins of Jinling", many people will feel depressed after watching it, and their emotions cannot be released. After careful review of this film, you will find that this film only has a climax and has no ending (the ending of the Thirteen Hairpins is not explained). As a result, the emotional climax cannot be released. In the story of Hachiko, the professor's death is the climax, and the next 30 minutes is the ending. Therefore, venting emotions in these 30 minutes will make people cry, and there will be no feeling of depression after watching the movie. For the beginning, development, climax and ending of "War Horse", why is it not as strong as "Hachiko". The reason is in the way of storytelling. War Horse is not a story, but a big story composition with many small stories. The whole film can be divided into two parts. 1 The beginning of the development part - beginning to separate from joey. 2 Climax - Joey's experience after and after separation. 3 Ending - get together. It can be seen that the first part of the film mainly focuses on the portrayal of the emotions of Albert and Joey, and its purpose is to allow the audience to accumulate emotions. Emotions peaked when Joey separated from Albert. But in the second part, the film's emotional expression for Albert and Joey is reduced to almost none. It mainly shows the relationship between the war horse and other people. This leads to the slow consumption of the emotions accumulated by the first part of the audience. The direct result lies in the third part, the lack of emotion that the audience wants to vent. Therefore, the emotional explosiveness of the film is also insufficient.
"War Horse" is adapted from the novel, but the novel is long and divided into chapters, so that readers feel partial emotions every time, and after reading, it is the accumulation of partial emotions. And the movie audience is watching it at one time, and the audience's emotions are not cumulative. Therefore, the narrative structure of "War Horse" is more suitable for TV series. This is also why it feels that "War Horse" doesn't want to be a movie, it is more like a collection of multiple movies. The farming part of Albert and Joey is like the farming version of "The Pentium Age", and the cavalry fighting section is like a personal heroism war movie. The German brothers and grandsons are partly like war dramas. The British and German armies rescuing the horse is like "Merry Christmas" and the final gathering of horses and horses is like "The Long Engagement". Finally, there is the same ending as "Gone with the Wind".
For such a film, I think that if the narrative can put the first part and the second part together, using two lines to narrate may alleviate the procrastination of the plot.
The above are some of my own opinions. This is the second time I have written a film review. Overall this is a very good movie. (especially the graphics and soundtrack)
