Well-known music producer Dan (Mark Ruffalo) has not signed a singer in recent years, and was fired by the record company he founded. Dan's daughter Violet (Hailee Steinfeld) is in the most rebellious phase of her life when he moves out of an apartment alone after his wife Marian (Catherine Keener) cheats.
The frustrated two met in a small bar. Greta came to the stage to sing a song at the invitation of a friend, and Dan, who was in the audience, decided to be her producer. The pair recorded an album outside with the help of a group of music friends and decided to sell it online for $1 instead of $10.
Eventually Dan and his daughter Violet improved their relationship and reconciled with ex-wife Marion. Although Dave wanted to reconcile with Greta, Greta found that the two had completely different musical ideas. Dave was more concerned about the gorgeous stage and the feelings of the fans.
