The movie is adapted from the novel of the same name by Charles Fraser. I haven't read the novel, although it is a bestseller, because I have read very few books published in recent years.
The first thing that comes to mind when watching this movie is "Gone with the Wind", which are all stories during the American Civil War. However, from the perspective of the film, "Gone with the Wind" focuses more on Scarlett's strength in the war, her belief in life, her dedication to life, and her love for the land (Tara). And "Cold Mountain" focuses more on the love between Ada and Inman. Love as a belief supports the persistence of the two, and the cruelty of the war also highlights the greatness of love. Of course, they all have a certain interpretation of the war, but the interpretation of the novel is more comprehensive and multi-faceted, and the film should naturally focus on love.
The film does not have too many positive expressions of war, and it all responds through an individual and an event. Although the whole is cruel and ugly, it cannot completely kill the warmth in people's hearts.
For example, the nurse reads the letter for the seriously injured Inman, the deserter (Inman) rescues the slave girl, the little boy returns the book to Inman when he is captured, the shepherd rescues Inman, Sarah takes in Inman, the northern soldier Baby wraps, people helping each other in Lengshan Town. These are all warm pictures in the cold mountains, which are even more beautiful in the brutal war, in the wanton growth of human evil, and in the cold air of ice and snow.
What I want to say about the war can be quoted from a line from Ruby in the film. They call this war a dark cloud on the earth, but in fact such weather is caused by themselves. They also stood in the rain and cried: "Damn, it's raining!".
Love in the war years may be more tragic, but this also reflects the greatness of love. The beautiful and enthusiastic city lady and the handsome and shy country carpenter have only met each other a few times, and in a few moments, they have imprinted each other in the bottom of my heart. Before they could tell each other sincerely, they were pulled apart by the war. This is a war that no one thought would be so long. The quick kiss before parting, the long war, the danger of returning home, the hardships of life. These all test the love between the two, but the love is not dead, it is even more great.
It is precisely because of the unfamiliarity between the two before they parted that it can better reflect the torment of the two people's insistence on this love; the dangers and hardships that the two have experienced respectively also shows the physical and mental tempering of the two. This only highlights the greatness of the love between the two.
What the film has to say is that the picture is very beautiful, and basically every shot can be used as a poster and wallpaper. Countryside manor, Lengshan snow scene, but more beautiful is the artistic conception. Ada looked into the mirror to see the future in the dry well. The turbid well water was swaying, and her lover was swaying on the way home with the water waves, and then disappeared again; on the snowy road, it became obvious that Inman came back. The figure, the scene where the two meet. After Inman died, the crows flew, the blood congealed in the snow, and Ada cried bitterly with the corpse; the little girl named Grace (God's gift) at the Mowan Farm at Easter.
Of course, there is too much to say about the moving plot, everyone still enjoys it quietly and appreciates it slowly.
Finally, let's talk about the director and the actors:
Director Anthony Minghella, he naturally has to say "The English Patient", the two films are also very similar, love in war, the expression of parallel double lines, picturesque shots, such a beautiful film Why bother with her similarities, just enjoy it quietly.
Nicole Kidman, who plays Ada, the blonde beauty, although critics say that she is doing well, but one face is enough, and the voice of the letter reading in the film is very nice.
Jude Law, playing Inman, although there are not many lines, but his handsome appearance, cold expression, sharp eyes, nothing to say. 06 The cafe owner in Wong Kar Wai's "Blueberry Night".
Renee Zellweger, who played the country girl Ruby, performed very well and deserved to be the Golden Man.
Natalie Portman, who plays the country widow Sara, lies next to her at night when Inman loses control when she clasps her hands, and shoots well-meaning Northern soldiers. Little Loli in "This Killer Isn't Too Cold".
