father's flag

The movie didn't say it directly, but roughly, I think it's like this: Among the 6 people who raised the flag, 3 people died before they knew they were heroes, and the remaining 3 people were packaged as countries by media hype Hero, as you can see from the very beginning of the movie, the scene of raising the flag in front of the American people is full of propaganda. But those three people are just ordinary soldiers. They didn't go into the war with the intention of becoming heroes. The more emotions are not even the defense of the country and the fascists as mentioned on the facade. The basic emotions run through the whole movie. During the war, they miss their hometown and relatives, and hope to return to the country alive. When they see their partners fall one by one, they feel that the meaning of war and life is changing and lost. The war looked completely different to them and to the American media. They are portrayed as heroes by the media, but they know it in their hearts. Perhaps more profoundly, you can imagine for yourself that after experiencing a catastrophe, you came back from a near-death situation, but the friends around you died one by one during the catastrophe. At the moment of your birth, many media interviewed you, and many people admired you and regarded you as a hero, but you don’t actually think that way in your heart. The more people mention some things, the more I want to avoid them. Some experiences are bone-chilling after all. No matter what others say, the one who knows that feeling best is yourself.

It seems that the war scenes of World War II movies like to apply the "semi-documentary" shooting method of "Saving Private Ryan", and this film is no exception. At the same time, the director tried to look at the war from multiple angles and layers. Personally, I feel that in order to set off the theme back and forth between realistic memories, although the narrative is distinctive but slightly messy, it affects the smoothness of the film.

Surprisingly, I didn't expect Dongmu to film a war movie with such good scene scheduling. It was so grand and nervous, and it was interesting to switch the perspective of the first battle. The film as a whole is relatively weak, and the branch lines are intertwined. It is a pity that this embarrassing story of war and human nature. What is a war hero, people get hope from them, politicians get benefits, but their inner pain and needs are ignored.

Flags of Our Fathers quotes

  • Bud Gerber: People on the street corners, they looked at this picture and they took hope. Don't ask me why, I think it's a crappy picture, myself. You can't even see your faces! But it said we can win this war, are winning this war, we just need you to dig a little deeper. They want to give us that money. No, they want to give it to *you*.

  • Dave Severance: Nobody even noticed that second flag going up. Everybody saw that damn picture and made up their own story about it. But your dad and the others knew what they had done, and what they had not done. All your friends dying, it's hard enough to be called a hero for saving somebody's life. But for putting up a pole?
