[The mission of the church] 1986
seems to be a boring topic, religion, but it is not a simple story. The film is adapted from a true story and takes place during the Spanish and Portuguese colonization in the 18th century. It is about the religious beliefs of local indigenous peoples and the survival of local churches in South America. Aboriginal slaves and religious asylum; the weakening of the power of the European church and the government’s interest in collusion; the land dispute between Spain and Portugal; where is God’s love? The church that people who believed in God used their lives to maintain was destroyed by another person who believed in the same. If the indigenous people leave the church, they will face slavery. Little girl: "they wont go back to the forest, because the devil is there." The
ending is tragic, and I didn't even dare to watch it. I really didn't watch it. I don't like the magnificent epic movie. The fate is doomed to a tragic ending.
The movie lens captures the beautiful and original natural scenery. The first half of the movie scenes are serene except for music, which directly hints at the coming of danger in many places. The aboriginal people’s harmony of praising God should be heard. You can also feel their unique customs, as well as some of the historical features of the 18th century that we have not experienced.

Religion has always been a huge lie for power and domination. It is full of political ugliness, and even now it seems that some scenes are still real and ugly despite changing the environment. If you don't have the relevant background knowledge, it's still difficult to understand the reason for the story. It really was shot for Europeans (who know more about history).

7.5. I don’t know much about the religious and political background, only the perception from the film. Waterfall climbing, two people’s choices, the fate of the Indians, and the eyes of children are moving. There are also some instrumental sentiments about religion and missionaries.

The Mission quotes

  • Altamirano: [to Cabeza and Hontar] And you have the effrontery to tell me that this slaughter was necessary?

  • Mendoza: Though I have all faith so that I could remove mountains and have not love, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor and though I give my body to be burned and have not love, it profiteth me nothing. Love suffereth and love is kind. Love envieth not. Love vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up. When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child. But when I became a man, I put away childish things. But now abideth faith, hope, love... these three. But the greatest of these is love.
