Inherent flaws in American society

Because of Pynchon's large and complex narrative, his novels have never been put on the screen before. Pynchon’s "Auction Lot 49" written in the 1960s and "The Vineyard" in the 1980s are both set in California. They and "Nature Is Evil" form Pynchon's "California Trilogy". "Nature is Evil" published in 2009, although it is the most clueful novel, PTA can successfully condense the social picture presented by Pynchon in two and a half hours. This is undoubtedly a bold and bold novel. A successful attempt.

The film takes the private investigator Doc as the perspective, and uses California as a microcosm of the entire United States to see the huge changes in the social structure of the United States in the late 1960s when the hippie culture was in full swing. This Odyssey tour reshaped through the "detective" is not only intended to outline the geopolitical and hippie cultural effects of Los Angeles, California, but also points to the hidden historical desires and hierarchical construction of the entire country. The Golden Fang, full of "conspiracy theories," is the mysterious sailing ship that runs through the history of the United States. It itself has become a metaphor for the stains in American history (black slaves/anti-communist). The epitome of the ugly internal structure of American society is still located in Ojai’s sanatorium, a sanatorium that seems to practice hippies, but is controlled by a strong anti-Communist and anti-Semitist political high-level. It is the democracy promoted by the United States. Political irony.

The seemingly careless and loose detective plot in the movie is looking for the three clues of real estate tycoon Mickey, old lover Shasta and unpredictable Coy. The director’s real intention is to make Doc a city roaming in the sense of Benjamin. However, through the one-sided and localized black comedy events experienced by Doc, PTA attempts to restore a holistic and comprehensive sociological and ideological cognition and understanding.

Pursuing the clarity of the plot logic, but not willing to give up the complexity of the characters that are loyal to the original work, and in order to reproduce the psychedelic sense of that unique temperament era, PTA's 2.5-hour new film is unavoidable. This adaptation is really a thankless and difficult task. If you want to fly into "Fear of Las Vegas", the multi-clue story involving the sense of the times and California's memory will not be able to show; What about the skin?

Robert Elswit's photography is very impressive, comparable to American Hustle's Linus Sandgren. The rest of the PTA is a bit awkward, not flying enough, and the rhythm is not very good.
