?? and ?? to tell and not to tell

I just swiped Weibo and saw a news that Microsoft may stop serving Chinese users. The United States has completely torn its face with China, and more and more companies are sanctioned. This is only an hour and a half, through a family, a film with different thinking between Chinese Americans and Chinese. It tells about the difference between the western culture and the eastern culture's views on death and family affection.

The part where everyone was at the restaurant table left a deep impression on me. Billie's mother's words always revealed a feeling that America is better than China. Although some relatives responded to the past, one of them still I plan to send my child to the United States. Sure enough, when it comes to going abroad, the moon is more round than a foreign country.

In China, 90% of families choose to hide the fact about whether or not to tell the elderly that they are sick. Sometimes I even wonder if the sick person knows they are sick, but in order to cooperate with the family's performance, I pretend that I don't know.

The Chinese have always been like this, always doing what they feel is right. I say it's good, it's good.

The story is simple, down-to-earth, true, and flesh and blood.

The centerpiece of SFFilm, the thousand-seat Castro Theater is almost full. The script is very good, and many of the dialogues that are full of Chinese flavors (such as Pinwa on the table) are well written. The actors, especially the heroines, act very well, and even if they don't speak, they can convey a lot of emotions and thoughts. The whole story is handled as a comedy under the strong shock of Chinese and American cultures. There are many scenes that are very unfamiliar to Americans, such as noisy weddings, and American audiences are all laughing happily. The strange thing is that although I didn't have the desire to laugh, and I didn't feel embarrassed by the laughter of others, I felt that the director's expression was very sincere, and he didn't belittle or elevate anything. To borrow Billi's words: "(Nothing is better, it's just) different." Therefore, in the face of scenes such as weddings and tomb sweepings, although it is a custom that I myself dislike very much, I do not feel humbled. The cultural conflict in the film is layered and resonant. The last time I watched a movie and cried like this was "Cold War", but that time it was to hurt someone else's arms, this time it was tears of relatability.

Like other Chinese film directors seeking roots, they float on the surface, staying at the director's only childhood memories of China, lacking in excavation and therefore lacking depth. The content of cultural conflicts is clichéd and superficial. In addition, except for the grandmother, the acting skills are very embarrassing.

The Farewell quotes

  • Jian: Chinese people have saying, when people get cancer they die. It's not cancer that kills them, it's the fear.

  • Jian: I don''t like, you know, put all my emotion on display. Like I''m in the zoo. But in here, if you don''t cry, you don''t put a show, they think that you don''t love your family. You know, in here, they even hire some professional criers. Just to show how sad they are. It''s just so ridiculous. I hate that.
