My Watchbook: Sex, Lies, and Videotape

I thought that this movie with an overly literary title would be boring, but after watching it, I found that it was actually very interesting. In this story, sex is the form of expression, the videotape is the medium of representation, and the lie is the center of the expression. A small videotape involves feelings, marriage, career, life, vanity... all kinds of relationships between people and the confusion and restraint of people themselves in life, so they are explained in an orderly manner. The four main characters in the film all live in their own lies more or less, they are involved in sex, they fall into confusion, and when they are reflected on the video tape, there is nothing to hide. There is a general sense of distrust in people's hearts, which has led to all kinds of lies to protect themselves. Only in the special channel of video tapes can they express their true self and only sex. It can become the most open topic and a breakthrough, so as to gradually free yourself from lies, shielding and self-protection, and find the most sincere and free thing. Here, the director seems to expose and ridicule the world, as well as some ideal wishes and encouragement, while leaving more reflections to the audience.

The biggest STD is not impotence, but lies about sex. But without lies, it seems that sex itself cannot exist. Soderbergh’s blasted debut novel, the process of his self-reflection is also the process of his genius gradually revealed. This kind of talent after introspection is the greatest sex appeal of being a director.

Sex, Lies, and Videotape quotes

  • Ann: I want to know why you are the way you are!

Graham: And I'm telling you it's not any one thing that I can point to and say "That's why!" It doesn't work that way with people who have problems, Ann, it's not that neat, it's not hat tidy! It's not a series of little boxes that you can line up and count. Things just don't happen that way.

  • Ann: You can't possibly trust him. He's perverted.
