Heal the heart

For a disabled person, the greatest barrier does not come from physical illness but the fragile heart, which will make him oversensetive to the outside world, scared, and closed. Maybe it's the same for normal people. That's the case for PHillip, the character in film “The upside”, who is a successful and rich investor and writer. He got high paraplegia in a paragliding accident caused by his fault and lost his wife. His life was trapped on the wheelchairs, so was his soul. He felt frustrated , guilty, miserable and lost control of everything. He was feared and tired of the discriminatory attitude from others, even well-meaning concerns. He wanted to end his life by “DNR” in case of emergency, so he hired an unqualified person , Dell, to be his life executive, who was a poor prisoner and wanted a signature for bail initially, but got a well paid job by an odd coincidence even though he knew nothing about the work. They belonged to totally different worlds, and of course had material and spiritual conflicts, but opened another door for each other to break their own obstacles. The two people warmed and saved each other to rekindle hope for life. There's some controversies on some details in the film, relating to racial or classic issues, which I don't pay attention to. Some blamed alterations in this new version not as warm as the old French version. But it's maybe more realistic that a man has defects under depression. This kind of expression may create more dramatic tensions that appeal to the andience's emotions. I regard it as a healing film with a perfect ending. They belonged to totally different worlds, and of course had material and spiritual conflicts, but opened another door for each other to break their own obstacles. The original version is too popular, but I also like the interpretation of this version.

    Much worse than the original

The Upside quotes

  • Dell Scott: [to Maggie] I'm not putting a straw in that man's drink and I'm not unpacking his luggage.

  • Philip Lacasse: Do you know about the DNR?

    Dell Scott: D and what?

Philip Lacasse: DNR. Do not resuscitate. It's something you'll have to agree to as my carer. Do you understand what that means?

Dell Scott: Like, I don't have to give you mouth-to-mouth if you're choking on your kumquat?

Philip Lacasse: No extraordinary measures if I stop breathing. Nothing.

Dell Scott: I'm good with nothing, man.
