This year marks the 50th anniversary of the release of "The Male and Female Thief". This pull sheet note was written a few years ago, revised and republished.

The historical background of the film:

American society in the 1960s was noisy and uneasy, the Vietnam War was in a quagmire, and domestic anti-war sentiment was high, minorities began to rise in the United States as important political and social forces, and the postwar baby boom generation They just grew up but are about to "break down" (the material conditions of this generation have been significantly improved, but the spirit has fallen into depression and emptiness). In the internal and external troubles, radical young people have developed a feeling of confrontation with tradition and reality, doubts about the existing system and living conditions, and resisting mainstream myths have become the targets of their various campaigns. Hippie evolved from the Beat generation, rock music evolved from jazz, and correspondingly, when the golden age of Hollywood had become a thing of the past, a group of young directors began some new attempts to reflect the younger generation’s feelings through films. Ideology and lifestyle, discussing social and political issues, and showing a strong "anti-establishment" color in ideology and artistic creation. They partly inherited Hollywood's traditional star system and industrialized production methods, and made bold and novel attempts within the system to give movies more realistic content and enrich the expression methods of various movie types. This historic moment is called the "new Hollywood movie", which drags the already dead Hollywood out of the mud and makes it glow with new and cutting-edge light.

A film revolution triggered by the French "New Wave" spread to the United States.

The impact of television on movies has also forced Hollywood to start new attempts.

Director: Arthur Penn was

born in 1922 and died in 2010. A director across TV, film, and drama. In 2007, he won the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Berlin Film Festival. His most important work is "The Male and Female Thief", the film opened a new dimension in Hollywood movies.
Directing background: The producer once asked Truffaut to direct, but he eventually directed "Fahrenheit 451" (1966). It is said that Truffaut recommends not to include the fact that Clyde in real life is bisexual in the movie. This suggestion was finally adopted. It is also said that the producer had considered asking Godard to direct the film, but because of Godard’s prejudice against Hollywood and the producer’s concerns, Godard did not direct the film in the end. The producer approached Arthur Penn for the first time, but he refused. After going to more than a dozen directors, they all refused. Finally, he approached Arthur Penn before he agreed.
Screenwriter Robert Benton (director of "The Cramers" and "Stain of Human Nature") and David Newman made great contributions to the film.

Explanation of pull film time mark:
Example: 000000-000218, digits 1 and 2 are hours, digits 3 and 4 are minutes, digits 5 and 6 are seconds, and 000218 refers to the position of 0 hours, 2 minutes and 18 seconds of the movie.

Subtitles and credits: 000000-000218
Historical photos of Bonnie and Clyde. The last two photos introducing the two are photos of the actors themselves, which have been processed to look like old photos. This shows that the film is adapted from real people and things. But the stylization of the film and the connotation of "drunkard's intention is not to drink" make it deviate from the biopic track.
The image in Clyde's film is quite different from the real person: the real person is short and thin.

Opening:
1. Bonnie appearance: 000218-000310
Starting from Bonnie's red lips, through a series of movements of Bonnie, portray a young woman who is restless, anxious and depressed.
2. Clyde's appearance and his encounter with Bonnie: 000310-000624
The bored Bonnie meets Clyde who is planning to steal the car. She knows that he wants to steal the car, but she can't help but strike up a conversation with him, and she is finally attracted by him.
Comparison of historical facts: In real life, before Bonnie and Clyde combined the male and female robbers, they had known each other for a long time. Unlike in the movie, they met and randomly became a male and female robber. They met through a sick friend. After Clyde went to jail, Bonnie never left him, and the two grew stronger in the correspondence. Later, Clyde was released on bail because he cut off his two toes. After reuniting with Bonnie, there was a sensational male and female robber. The plot of cutting off his toe and being released on bail is preserved in the film.
This shows that the screenwriter did not intend to write a biopic at the beginning, but intended to write a stylized film on the basis of facts.
Such an opening may seem absurd, but in the cultural trend of the 1960s, such behavior does not seem to be an exaggeration. This is not a film faithful to history, but it is a work faithful to the times.

000630-000821:
The first robbery: Clyde succeeded and won Bonnie's favor in
Roosevelt's presidential campaign advertisement, explaining the background of the times: During the Great Depression of 1929-1933, the unemployment rate was once as high as one-quarter and crime was rampant.

000821-000925:
Cheerful music on the road, comedy effects, different from traditional bandit movies.

000900-000925:
"Let me explain first that I am not a good lover (a suggestion of impotence)." Clyde said.
This subverts the image of bandit in traditional bandit movies. The word "subversion", I will often mention in the following content, because "The Male and Female Thief" has become a classic because of its subversive nature. In traditional bandit films, bandits are powerful characters with excess hormone secretion, but Clyde in the film is a sexually impotent image.
This also weakens the robber's "bad guy" image and increases the cuteness of the robber.
Of course, we can also understand it as a metaphor: a metaphor of social incompetence...

000925-001100:
Two restless people, two people eager for self-realization, they will walk together and do some earth-shattering things.

002615-003048: After
Moss entered the group, the first robbery, because of Moss mistake, Clyde killed the bank staff in panic, and they became murderers.
Clyde's performance afterwards showed that he was not a cruel robber. He didn't want to kill any innocent people, let alone drag down his lover.

003048-003400:
A scene that positively shows Clyde's impotence. Although Bonnie is very depressed, she loves Clyde and chooses to tolerate and stay with him.
Here is a reference to "Natural Murderer"...Different from the traditional robber image...
Metaphor...Hollywood's sexual incompetence, social incompetence...

Bonnie, Clyde and others get together with Bonnie's family. This beautiful and short moment is still in a dream. This is the last calm for Bonnie and Clyde, after which they will gradually come to a tragic ending.
The special photography and special filters used make the image look not very clear, dim, as if it is far away, like a mirage.

Various subversions of the film:

Subversion of traditional bandit films-bandit films, as an earlier film genre in American film history, tend to decline with the fortune of one or a group of bandits, the course of crime, and the final decline And the history of failure constitutes a middle mood festival, and through the stories of these robbers, it provides the audience with a lot of action scenes and suspense. Arthur Payne adopts a comedic style and satirizes the myth of traditional Hollywood bandit films.

Subverted the image of robbers-no longer a cruel and heinous image, no longer a powerful and overly energetic image, Bonnie and Clyde and their accomplices are all reduced to being ordinary people who have committed crimes. Can be very kind, can be cute, can be helpless, can be cowardly... the male protagonist can even be impotent...

Subverted mainstream values-the film focused on showing the affinity of this group of bandits, they even became popular idols, rather than being cast aside or being attacked. The characterization of the film deliberately de-moralizes the positioning, and is no longer limited to themes of justice and crime... The film implies that the government, courts, and police slaughtered two living lives and put them on this path of life. It is attributed to the cruelty of society and family to young people...

Other: the description of daily life, the psychological details of the characters...

The classic narrative of the "new Hollywood movie": new wine in old bottles is still a structure of rise, inheritance, transfer, and integration.
Beginning: Bonnie and Clyde meet.
Inheritance:
Meeting farmers who lost their homes due to the Great Depression, shooting bank seals to vent : The Barlow Gang and Bonnie’s family met, heralding the beginning of tragedy. The first two-thirds of the film is basically a comedy.
He: The plot descends sharply. First, Buck was shot and Blanche was injured and arrested, and then Bonnie and Clyde were murdered... The film was sublimated in the tragedy of bullet baptism...

Bonnie and Clyde quotes

  • [about Bonnie's poem]

Clyde Barrow: You know what you done there? You told my story, you told my whole story right there, right there. One time, I told you I was gonna make you somebody. That's what you done for me. You made me somebody they're gonna remember.

  • Clyde Barrow: Alright. Alright. If all you want's a stud service, you get on back to West Dallas and you stay there the rest of your life. You're worth more than that. A lot more than that. You know it and that's why you come along with me. You could find a lover boy on every damn corner in town. It don't make a damn to them whether you're waitin' on tables or pickin' cotton, but it does make a damn to me.

    Bonnie Parker: Why?

Clyde Barrow: Why? What's you mean, "Why?" Because you're different, that's why. You know, you're like me. You want different things. You got somethin' better than bein' a waitress. You and me travelin' together, we could cut a path clean across this state and Kansas and Missouri and Oklahoma and everybody'd know about it. You listen to me, Miss Bonnie Parker. You listen to me.
