I'm so glad to see such a beloved drama again. I remember reading a book when I was a freshman, called "Meet on Tuesday". There was a dialogue about family that made me very impressed. Excerpted here.
"Well, my friend," he said, "what are we talking about today?"
How about family?
"Family," he thought for a moment. "Well, you have seen my family. They are all around me."
He nodded and motioned me to look at the pictures on the bookshelf. There were pictures of Morrie with his grandmother when he was young, and those of Morrie with his brother David when he was young. Group photo, and a photo of him with his wife Charlotte and two sons. The eldest son Rob works as a reporter in Tokyo, and the younger son Jon is a computer expert in Boston.
"I think family issues have become particularly important given what we have been talking about in the past few weeks," he said.
"In fact, if there is no family, people will lose the foundation to support. I understand this more after getting sick. If you don't get support from the family. Caress, care and care, you have less things. Poor, love is supreme, as our great poet Oden said,'Love or die.'"
"Love or die," I wrote it down. Oden said this?
"Be in love or die," said Morrie. "It's so good, it's so right. Without love, we are birds with broken wings.
" Suppose I am divorced, or live alone, or have no children. This disease-the disease I have suffered-will be even more unbearable. I'm not sure if I can handle it. Of course, someone will come to visit, friends, colleagues. But they are not the same as family members who will not leave. This is not the same as having someone who always cares about you and is inseparable from you.
"This is part of the meaning of family, not just love, but also telling others that someone will guard you. This is what I wanted most when my mother died-I call it'mental safety'-knowing that there is a home guarding you For you. Only. Family can give you this feeling. Money can't do it. Fame can't do."
He glanced at me.
"I can't do work," he added.
Especially after going to college, this feeling is getting stronger and stronger. Family is the biggest driving force to support you. You never have to worry that the world will abandon you, because no matter what, there is a family behind you. you. I call this the driving force of love.
I have nothing else to say. Perhaps some of the feelings of joy when watching this play cannot be reproduced in words. Do you know this feeling? The feeling of joy and happiness spreads from the bottom of my heart.
Those shadows of love~
