Thank God for Bo Burnham

There was an actor Q&A at Hilcrest Cinema last weekend. Hillcrest is my favorite theater in San Diego. Although there are strangers sitting next to them, they all understand you and love what you love.

After watching Eighth Grade, I originally wanted to write an article about how much I like Bo. Once I turned over the computer, I wrote an article about how much I love his Stand-up, but now I have finished watching his director’s first work. , I think I fell in love with him again. I came back to discuss our favorite Comedian with Tong. I told her that after watching so many standups, Bo was my favorite, and I felt very embarrassed. My favorite turned out to be a straight white dude (touché) about my age.

Eighth Grade tells the story of a 13-year-old girl in eighth grade, Kayla, in the last week of junior high school. Actor Elise Fisher just graduated from the eighth grade when he was making the movie. Bo said that when casting the role, other girls who auditioned were confident girls trying to act like a 13-year-old embarrassed little girl, but Elise was a timid girl who insisted on acting confidently. The trivial things you can think of for junior high school students, what you have experienced, and what you have heard of, are all in the movie. I feel that my parents are in charge of everything, I think I have ideas but no one knows myself, I want to have a boyfriend, I look forward to high school life, and I feel that the very popular girl is actually not good at all, even after being harassed. I did it wrong.

There is a section in the film, Kayla, who has been preparing for a long time, went to the birthday pool party of her classmates, and seemed very out-of-group (don't we all), but then volunteered to sing K. Bo compares this paragraph to the feeling of standing on stage when he was performing standup since he was a child. He wanted to perform, but he was panic and anxious when he really stood on stage and didn't know how to perform.

Bo said that when he made this movie, the audience he thought was not really eighth grade girls. He filmed it for himself and for everyone who can see himself in Kayla's life. Seeing Kayla sing K, I thought of myself being prepared to participate in reception/networking. You know you should do these things, you know that you should strive to meet your expectations, but you must have a lot of courage to do it. . He is a person who is not confident, pretending to be extremely confident, to cover up his lack of self-confidence.

When I came back from watching the movie, I kept thinking, watching Bo's work, that the thoughts that have been bothering me but can't say can be described accurately by such a person who can't beat me. When I came back and turned over the comments, I felt that many people, whether men, women, young or old, felt the same way. Probably it is a real artist. Their works are all true and genuine, not what they think the audience wants to see.

The irony is that Eighth Grade tells the story of a 13-year-old girl, but the film is not rated PG-13, but R-rated. Audiences under the age of 17 need to be accompanied by an adult audience to watch it. It mentioned sex, oral sex, and a scene. I think the best scene in the whole film has a strong sexual undertone. Those who have watched the movie think that although we did not have a smartphone, Instagram, or snapchat when we were 13 years old, there was nothing in the movie that the 13-year-old didn’t know. Bo said that although he was disappointed, he was not surprised. Although he wrote this story for himself, he feels that the audience is all those who feel that they are uncomfortable and troublesome but still have to bite the bullet.

It has been more than two years since Bo’s last standup performance. He said that he would panic after standing on the stage and would not be able to perform well. So now directing a movie is another kind of performance. Although I really want to watch him stand on stage, I will wait patiently (my template is for those who have waited for Dave Chappelle for so many years and waited for him back).

Also bonus points why I love him so much.

It's too real. When I was in junior high school, I was determined to be the coolest person. When I grew up, I despised my second-year self. It's too real.

Many long shots, brewing emotions, every embarrassing attempt, as if desperate, lonely as long as a century, and finally grew up
