On the silvery sea, a fishing boat gradually appeared in our sight. As the camera progresses, we hear a burst of singing from a fishing girl, Ruby Rossi, the protagonist of the film.
"The Listening Girl" is a remake of French director Eric Latigau's "Berry's Family". The remake of this film was very successful and won the 94th Academy Award for Best Picture and many more. awards.
The film tells the story of a hearing girl, Ruby, who needs to accompany her deaf father and brother to go fishing every day. But when she was appreciated by Mr. Wei and recommended to study at the Conservatory of Music, Ruby began to hesitate between her dream and her family.
The director's use of the lens is excellent. During one of Ruby's singing, the director used the rear camera to lock the focus on the back of Ruby's parents, and then zoomed in to focus on Ruby on the stage. What makes the audience notice is that the singing gradually disappears with the zoom lens, and penetrates into the perspective of the deaf. The camera switched between Ruby's father and other audiences many times, allowing the audience to deeply appreciate the confusion of deaf and mute people in this environment, fully demonstrating the charm of audio-visual appeal. Even though Ruby's family couldn't hear Ruby's singing at all, they stood up and cheered and applauded after Ruby's singing. I think this kind of love between relatives is beyond everything.
There was another scene that moved me. When Ruby sang, his father stared at Ruby's mouth seriously and put his hand on Ruby's vocal cords, trying to feel Ruby's singing through the vibration of the vocal cords, and Ruby also became popular with his father's actions eye socket. In this section, the director used a double camera to give Ruby and her father the fixed camera respectively, clearly showing their actions and demeanor in front of the audience.
This is a warm and inspiring film. Although the family expressed their reluctance to study music because they couldn't hear Ruby's singing, they were willing to support her dream. It's a love that goes beyond sound.
