Devil and Angel

I read a commentary on "The Devil's Epidemic" in Ming Pao before. It said that the story of this movie is science vs. religion, but it is very unreliable because of its superstition. So I thought this movie might have the same nature as "Into Pseudoscience". But after reading it, I realized that it’s not the case. "The Plague" does not claim to be a scientific masterpiece, and its main point is not to explain who is right or wrong in science and religion. The main responsibility of the film is not to spread science and eliminate superstition, but to entertain everyone. Even science fiction films that give a lot of face to science are not promoting science to break superstitions. In the final analysis, exaggerated science that is inconsistent with reality can be regarded as a kind of superstition gimmick. I wonder why Mr. Shi Qi, the author of the article, cares so much about this.

If Mr. Shi Qi is really dissatisfied, then we can actually look at it from another angle, this movie can be regarded as breaking the superstition. Because "The Devil's Plague" can be regarded as an anti-cult. Religion is not necessarily the enemy of mankind, but cults must be. Going big, this movie also teaches people to have the ability to think independently. Don't listen to people who think that a bad guy is really a bad guy. It has a profound educational significance for young people.

Although the story mode of "The Plague" is not novel (it is said to have been filmed two years ago), it is a bit similar to the "Brothers Grimm" who acted like ghosts at the beginning and found out that there are real ghosts. But "The Plague" is not boring, and it is good in handling foreshadowing and suspense. Watching this movie requires brainstorming, and movies that ask people to use their brains are not bad. Finally, what is more surprising is that the heroine and the cult leader really have a leg. So I thought it was just a dream of the heroine.

The Reaping quotes

  • [on killing Loren]

[Katherine throws the knife onto the ground]

    Katherine Winter: You do it.

[Doug picks up the knife but doesn't use it]

Katherine Winter: You can't do it, can you? Because you already tried and she survived.

Doug Blackwell: No, that's not true.

Katherine Winter: [beginning to get upset] You deceived me so I would murder her. This... this innocent child.

[helps Loren to her feet and into her arms]

Doug Blackwell: She's not innocent, Katherine.

    [signals fire]

Doug Blackwell: Look what she's done already. You see it with your own eyes.

Katherine Winter: You killed Ben... so I would blame her.

[has a vision of Doug stabbing Ben]

Katherine Winter: [to Loren] Come on.

  • Loren McConnell: [gasping and shaking] I'm so lucky.

    Katherine Winter: Why?

    Loren McConnell: Because, silly.

[scene cuts to Katherine and her daughter, then back again]

Loren McConnell: God gave me to you.
