Little people have dreams

One of the more interesting scenes of this year’s Oscars Gala was that a group of people who looked very different from the scene came to the stage to sing the best song of the candidate, and then went to the stage together. The host is not without emotion: This is just like the appearance of a party celebration. Martin Scorsese made all the films about Mafia, and he didn't get a personal Oscar, but he got Three 6 Mafia. At that time, I didn't like that theme song very much. I saw Hustle & Flow and found it to be pretty good. It's a bit of the meaning of Stephen Chow's movie: little people also have dreams.

But the story behind the film seems more exciting. Director Craig Brewer did not find funding until five years after the script was completed, because he was white but wanted to make black rap movies. The famous director and producer John Singleton was very interested in the script, but failed to raise funds. In the end, he contributed 3 million to complete the film. The film was shot in Memphis, the city of music, and the choreographer and song creator Three 6 Mafia also came from Memphis. Probably because the funds are too tight, I don't feel much about the beauty of the city of Memphis after watching the film. The Mississippi River and the railroad bridge crossing Tennessee and Arkansas appeared in the film several times as a cutscene, which can be regarded as an explanation of the location. Like most movies that reflect the lives of the lower class, it's basically black. Except for New York, there are not many beautiful cities in American movies.

Starring Terence Howard was nominated for best actor. In Crash, he acted as the director of the TV station and was insulted by the white policeman. Last year was a bumper year for him, but the money was not much. Both were independent productions. One paid 12 thousand and the other nine thousand, probably not enough for a month of personal consumption.

Hustle & Flow quotes

  • DJay: See... man ain't like a dog. And when I say "man," I'm talking about man as in mankind, not man as in men. Because men, well, we a lot like a dog. You know, we like to piss on things. Sniff a bitch when we can. Even get a little pink hard-on the way they do. We territorial as shit, you know, we gonna protect our own. But man, he know about death. Got him a sense of history. Got religion. See... a dog, man, a dog don't know shit about no birthdays or Christmas or Easter bunny, none of that shit. And one day God gonna come calling, so you know, they going through life carefree. But people like you and me, man, we always guessing. Wondering, "What if?" You know what I mean? So when you say to me, "Hey, I don't think we should be doing this," I gotta say, baby, I don't think we should be doing this neither, but we ain't gonna get no move on in this world, lying around in the sun, licking our ass all day. I mean, we man. I mean, you a woman and all, but we man. So with this said, you tell me what it is you wanna do with your life.

  • Shug: I get like this because I'm pregnant and everything... but, you know, letting me sing on the... on the demo and everything like you do... well, it just... it made me feel real. Real special. And... I mean, I know y'all gonna be moving on and moving up... and y'all gonna get real good people to sing, you know, back up for you and everything... but I just... D, I need you to know it meant the world to me.
