Love Scene
(In the film, Rachel goes to Deckard's residence, the scene where the two have an emotional exchange for the first time. Rachel plays the piano, Deckard pushes her to the window and kisses her.)

I have been there several times Replaying the Love Scene in Blade Runner at different places and times, sometimes by myself, sometimes with some people, I think this scene is probably a concrete representation of my understanding of love to some extent, I hope I understand it more, I also vaguely hope that people around me will understand, so that I can get close to knowing me in such an expression.

This scene contains a lot of my imagination about love—silence, violence, fear and escape of love, and the unreliability of memory. Sean Young, the actor of Rachel, talked about this scene in an interview, mentioning that this is not a love scene in the usual sense, and she herself does not like it, and does not even want to re-enact it. She revealed on another occasion that when filming this scene, Harrison Ford played Deckard and pushed her hard to the window, her reaction to the pain and expression were real, not acting.

She also mentioned that the reason why this is not a Love Scene in the usual sense is to understand the purpose of this scene. As a biochemical person created, Rachel is an individual who has never experienced love and sex. Her understanding of herself and the whole world is entirely from memory. These memories are instilled into her heart, and memories cannot be equated with feelings, so she is like a recording machine without feelings. When he faced Deckard, she couldn't understand the feeling he had in her heart, so her first direct reaction was to run away in a hurry. Why escape? Because when love first arises, it is never something that makes people feel safe. It should contain both fear and expectation.

Next, Deckard helped her rebuild her self in a violent way, allowing her to establish her perception of feelings for the first time, from a machine that stores memories to an individual who truly possesses feelings. Imagine our own past. Do most people slowly begin to feel the existence of themselves at the moment when love begins? The meaning of love is not only to make people discover another soul that attracts oneself, but also to see the reflection of one's own soul more clearly while seeing him/her.

The soundtrack of this scene is composed of background music and the piano sound played by Rachel. The two melodies circulate and overlap each other. The electronic composite sound image of the background floats in the air, and the piano sound is soft and slow. The slanting sunlight projected in from the narrow slits of the curtains, and Rachel spread out the high upright hair. Her face was expressionless, thin and flat, but there was a kind of alarming beauty. The song Memories of Green in the film's soundtrack should be made for her.

Sean Young, the actor of Rachel, has constant disturbances and troubles in his real life. During the filming of Wall Street, he was weakened into a marginal role due to quarrels with the director. Later, he was troubled by alcoholism and legal issues. From the peak of Blade Runner, it seems to be going all the way down. It was silent for several years in the middle. It only appeared occasionally in independent films, or appeared in unimportant roles.

In a recent interview, he complained that director Ridley gave Theron a role that was originally suitable for her in Prometheus. He was aggrieved by this and commented on Theron’s performance as "She was bored out of her mind" (extremely boring). It can be felt that despite having such a golden halo appearance, her life has not been satisfactory.

Sean Young said in the interview that the age of Blade Runner is 2020, and she was still alive at that time, and the biochemical man described in the movie is completely possible. It is because of this possibility that helped her establish the self-existence of this role. She also mentioned that she hopes that in 2020, her country and city will not be as desolate and desolate as those depicted in the movie.

Now that we are at the beginning of 2016, we still have four years to go, and we are also entering 2020. It is impossible to predict what the world will look like, whether it will be better or worse. Looking back on the past four years, the world has changed too much.

No matter what kind of world we are in, when we ask about love, self, memory, these puzzling questions no matter how much time we have traveled, we still cannot be sure what constitutes the most real thing about ourselves. . Is it a cumulative memory? Memories will be tampered with, maybe not. Is it a feeling? If one day machines also have feelings, what is the most essential difference between us and machines?

What is love after all.

If it is said that in a dystopian world, the aesthetic value of decadence and rundown can be maximized, then in anti-Hollywood traditional aesthetic classics such as Blade Runner, the encounter between the protagonist and the dystopia creates more than just It is a very depressive reflection, and more importantly, the doubt about "existence" itself, which can only be compared with Gilliam's "Brazil".

Many details are worth scrutinizing carefully. The sci-fi films made in that era are really amazing, but the picture is so dark that the eyes are a little tired.
