I think war is just a big background in this movie. Perhaps what this movie really expresses is that under a specific background, everyone will change ~ from a "butcher" living in a family environment that is despised by his father, and thus becoming a life. For others, from volunteering to join the army to experience life in Parton, to a small withdrawal... hey~ this is something we can't avoid.
But the power of friendship inside is also moving: Parton "admits" his mistake because he fears that Booth will be punished again; Booth's giving up and fleeing is estimated as a brother...
