"To Be or Not to Be", in memory of Gable's wife

When I bought the DVD, I didn’t expect much. The comedy directed by Liu Bieqian is still not as intimate as Frank Capa’s comedy. The Chinese title "You Run and I Run" also made me feel a little frivolous; but after watching it, , Still gave me a lot of unexpected gains.

First of all, I noticed before watching that the leading actress is Carol Lombard (the old translation of Carlo Lambert), Clark Gable’s third wife and the love of his life. During World War II, he went to various places to promote national salvation. Bond and unfortunately died in a plane crash. When I was in junior high school, I saw an introduction to the film about their husband and wife in the Illustrated Film, and I knew their story; in my heart, she is a legendary actress, always curious, wanting to see Gable’s favorites What kind of character is this woman?

The film unfolds in the context of the German undeclared war on Poland and the bombing of Warsaw into ruins. It describes an actor in a theater in Warsaw playing an amateur spy by mistake, and a series of comedy scenes with a series of wits against the Gestapo. Liu Bieqian's usual irony, as well as his patriotic and anti-fascist passion for justice and touching.

Carlo Lambert played Mrs. Maria Tula, a well-known drama actress in Warsaw, but she had a fellow husband, Mr. Tula, who had a bad acting skills. The young fan and Air Force Lieutenant Sobinski admired her deeply and was allowed to play in the picture. When Mr. La played "Hamlet" and read the line "To Be or Not to Be", he went to the dressing room to find Maria. Soon after World War II broke out, the lieutenant returned to Warsaw secretly after seeing through the German spy Professor Celeski in the army, and staged a counterintelligence comedy with the Tula couple and other actors in the theater. Maria is witty, brave, and gentle and firm in patriotism. Through her, I can feel the enthusiasm and spirit of Carlo himself. Although the comments have different opinions on her promotion of national salvation bonds, there are positive and moving descriptions, and there is also a skeptical tone such as "patriotism does not fall behind", but I would rather believe that she is really patriotic and caring for the people; why not go for the good side Think about it? In the situation back then, people with a little conscience would at least share the same hatred of the enemy, and with my little knowledge of her, I would also like to believe in its authenticity. Think about the time of our earthquake.

I wondered about Gable's love for Carlo, and I always felt that he liked not only her appearance, but also her stubborn character, tenacious and unyielding, perseverance, unyielding and courageous spirit. I really believe this is the case, even if I have thought that if it were not for her accidental death, Gable would not necessarily be able to stay with her for life; but with some of Gable’s later actions, especially those days when he joined the Air Force, I believe at least Gable had indeed loved Carlo. Her death was a big blow to him; perhaps Gable was not a good husband in private life, but he was still a respectable person. Recently, I have accidentally encountered several movies related to World War II, and there are many works that are being shot during the war. I am very touched by my thoughts on how to live.

It's too much to say, but I still can't help but want to add a few words. Suddenly I remembered a piece of "Eternal Love" that I had read a long time ago, about a wife who had been in a coma for 20 years and later regained her husband’s love. I was deeply impressed by the husband’s words in it: "Her personality is the same as I knew back then. She was very similar when she was." The friend said, "So you fall in love again." It is this kind of strong and unyielding spirit, which is still very moved when I think of it; I think Carlo has this spirit in him. I believe that for many people, there is always someone he (she) will never forget throughout his life.

Having said so many "legendary" aspects, I almost forgot that Carlo himself is also a very talented actor, with excellent acting skills and kindness. Recently, my view of "golden hair" has obviously changed, and she is one of the reasons. I like the emotional rivalry between Maria and her husband.

This movie is Carlo's last posthumous work, and it was released after her death. I wonder if Gable went to the premiere.

For Carlo, this film may have a fateful taste in it; I feel sad for her in my heart. Believe that she is happy in Heaven.

Recommended by Gao Gao, it is really a good-looking film. The several reversals completely make people follow the plot. The men and women are also particularly in line with classical aesthetics. Those laughs are not out of date today, and they are comparable to "The Great Dictator".

To Be or Not to Be quotes

  • Joseph Tura: Oh, darling, you were right this morning. I felt so rotten after the rehearsal that I went to Dobash and told him when he advertises the new play to put your name first.

Maria Tura: Did you, darling? Oh, that's sweet of you; but, I really don't care.

Joseph Tura: That's what Dobosh said, so we left it as it was.

  • Joseph Tura: [disguised as Professor Siletsky] Well, Colonel, all I can say is... you can't have your cake and shoot it, too.
