The beautiful Alice is singing, like a skylark, like grass in the empty valley...

"Dear thoughts are in my mind and my soul it soars enchanted, As I hear the sweet lark sing in the clear air of the day| "(Lark in the Clear Air) has never tire of listening, Kate reinterpreted this timeless old song in her eleventh film "The Long Road Is Near│Iris".

This equally timeless biopic tells the 40-year deep love story between the famous British philosopher and novelist Iris Murdoch and her husband John Bailey. Kate and Judi Dench, one of Britain’s greatest actresses, respectively play the roles of the young and old, who is known as the "British Smartest Woman". The young Alice sings "Chongkong". The part of "Skylark" is arranged at the end of the film. The director hopes that the audience will remember her creative power and love of life. It is also a cappella, but the singing voice is more experienced and heavy than in "Sense and Emotion" five years ago, and the general style that can only be seen in Emma Thompson at the beginning.

Infinitely moved, all in it, Judi Dench's acting skills really have nothing to say!

Two and a half stars. Jim Broadbent later collaborated with Mike Leigh several times. Photographer Roger Pratt was a former co-photographer of Leigh. I don't like Horner's music. Speaking of the movie, who would like to speak and preach as soon as it comes up? The whole is close enough to the male protagonist's point of view, but it can be said that only some clichés are shown/utilized. I still like the theme, or I have found a theme I like: an individual has his own personal world, and the closest life partner can only watch the leopard. How should we face the mystery of this life?

Iris quotes

  • Iris Murdoch: Every human soul has seen, perhaps before their birth, pure forms such as justice, temperance, beauty and all the great moral qualities which we hold in honour. We are moved towards what is good by the faint memory of these forms, simple and calm and blessed, which we saw once in a pure, clear light, being pure ourselves.

  • Young Iris Murdoch: Yes, of course, there's something fishy about describing people's feelings. You try hard to be accurate, but as soon as you start to define such and such a feeling, language lets you down. It's really a machine for making falsehoods. When we really speak the truth, words are insufficient. Almost everything except things like "pass the gravy" is a lie of a sort. And that being the case, I shall shut up. Oh, and... pass the gravy.
