Same, different

Seeing this Thomas Moore's determination, I couldn't help but think of another Chinese figure, Fang Xiaoru, who also lost his head for the emperor's family affairs. This is the similarity between the two.

What's the difference?

Thomas Moore is loyal to his faith, Catholicism; and Fang Xiaoru is only loyal to his former master, Zhu Di’s nephew, or it can be said to be loyal to his beliefs, the Confucian loyalty and forgiveness.

Thomas Moore arranged for his family to go abroad in exile to avoid possible disasters, while Fang Xiaoru watched his family and relatives being massacred.

Moore was tried in public. Although it was an unfair trial, it also went through legal procedures and the verdict of the jury; while Fang Xiaoru died under the personal instructions of Zhu Di.

The biggest difference comes from the king they face. Zhu Di has impeccable power and authority, while the dignified king of England is so difficult even to change his wife. Executing a minister is also through such a complicated procedure and waiting for so long.

Ryosagosago Thomas More was famous for his classic work "Utopia", and he was executed in 1535 for opposing Henry VIII's concurrent appointment as head of the church. As a martyr among Catholics, he has very rarely achieved unanimous admiration from the left and the right, with the left discovering his communist ideals and the right his allegiance to Catholicism. The movie "Loyalty to the Sun and the Moon" is adapted from the real life of Thomas More, and restores the turbulent and confusing religious and political struggles of this period into images one by one. Erasmus was deeply saddened by the death of such a man to whom he had so much praised when the terrible news of Maul's execution came. "His soul is purer than Snow White. There has never been a genius like him in England, and there will never be another." Erasmus hailed him as "a man fit for any age", which is probably where the title came from. More and Cromwell came to the same destination, More did not want to make Cromwell better

Indoor play, the whole chapter is full of wonderful dialogue, with a style close to that of the Twelve Angry Men.

A Man for All Seasons quotes

  • [after King Henry VIII leaves]

Alice More: What's this? You crossed him?

    Sir Thomas More: Somewhat.

    Alice More: Why?

Sir Thomas More: I couldn't find the other way.

Alice More: You're too nice altogether, Thomas.

Sir Thomas More: Woman, mind your house!

Alice More: I am minding my house!

  • Cardinal Wolsey: You're a constant regret to me, Thomas. If you could just see facts flat-on, without that horrible moral squint... With a little common sense you could have made a statesman.
