Gettysburg

There is no clear position, just like Homer narrating the epic, empathizing the hero's tragic destiny. This is a modern version of the Greek epic, and both sides of the war feel that they are just and noble. The North thinks they are fighting to eliminate slavery, the South thinks they are fighting to defend their hometown and independence. The descendants of the founding fathers, the sons of the president, the honor students of West Point Military Academy, how many of the best fighters of the time fought for their beliefs, and how many comrades who had been close to each other were their masters and the same room. This war is the pain of the United States. No matter whether it wins or loses, neither side of the war feels that they are heroes. They both feel shame and regret for the civil war. The film reproduced the scene of the war at that time. The soldiers lined up and braved the rain of bullets and marched firmly to the opponent's position. Seeing the comrades beside them fall, the artillery shells exploding next to them, the bullets whizzing past their ears, and watching. The wounded soldier was sawn off his arms and legs in the open air, which required much courage. War is cruel and bloody, there is no romance at all, this is the real war.

Extended Reading

Compared with the several battles in "Gods and Generals", the 270min extended version is much more familiar with the background of the battle of Gettysburg, and I have unknowingly watched it completely. Perhaps it is the film that used the most volunteer extras in American history. Although it is difficult to organize and schedule, the scene inevitably looks a little chaotic, but the effect of queuing to shoot is still more textured than CG. The historical facts are restored to a high level, but unfortunately there are too few descriptions of the North Army's senior level, 8 points.

The Civil War turned out to be completely different from what was imagined. . . Heroes and honor, blood and sacrifice. The ambitions of the North will be won, and the ambitions of the South are unpaid, both are worthy of admiration. The magnificent music in the opening paragraph will always linger in my ears.

  • [Pickett likes to wear perfume]

Lieutenant General James Longstreet: Good Lord, George, what is that smell?

Major General George E. Pickett: That's me.

Brigadier General Lewis A. Armistead: He got it off a dead Frenchman.

  • Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain: Many of us volunteered to fight for the Union. Some came mainly because we were bored at home and this looked like it might be fun. Some came because we were ashamed not to. Many came because it was the right thing to do.
