This is a Cthulhu style movie.
The traces of the novel "The Haze of Innsmouth" can be clearly seen, and there is no doubt that the script is based on this novel. But the Cthulhu-style horror is obviously not reflected in this movie.
The horror of Cthulhu mythology lies in the "atmosphere." Horror existences like the "old ruler" often do not reveal their real body, but highlight their horror through hints or traces left, such as Deformed human believers (deep divers in this film), weird statues, terrible legends, etc. After all, the audience's imagination is the scariest place.
Therefore, if it is a film dedicated to the performance of "Romantic horror", its shooting method is too "straightforward", and the horror atmosphere is far from being rendered. There are only a few fragments of the male protagonist’s dream and the weird hotel. There is such a "weird" taste, most of which are directly placed in front of you with scary things, and even added the bridge segment of the b-level film such as skinning, without the "infiltration" of fear. In the end, the big boss Dagon appeared on the scene-isn't this just a big octopus, this made the mystery disappear completely, and the special effects were relatively rough, making the previous foreshadowings meaningless.
And if it is a traditional horror film, it seems too long-winded. Although the octopus girl, blood sacrifice, skinning, etc. are curious, there is still a big gap between movies with similar themes, or the "intensity" of fear is too low. The whole film is only The female protagonist’s pale face is scary, and it does not meet the requirements of a qualified American horror film.
