The war is cruel, but what is even more cruel is the meaningless sacrifice of countless soldiers, so much suffering, fear and persistence, and finally means nothing. Excerpted from the last paragraph of the film what the veterans said after returning home from the war:
"People don't discuss the war at all. They are completely uninterested in what happened, and they have no idea about the war." "So the millions of us don't deserve to say'Thank you very much', you go to the wild mud. Rolling back in a circle, even the ethics is lost, why do you want to be grateful!" "We and civilians are completely two different creatures. You can talk to your comrades, and they all understand. But with ordinary people, it's just a waste. Time is over." "They can't understand the feeling that a good friend who played football with them died next to them." "Ordinary people only know the mud and lice on our back, but they can't imagine sitting in the trenches. The psychological torture of waiting for the shells to fall." "People can’t understand how terrible war is. They might think of war as a continuous cavalry charge." Bibi sword on his back, but then something terrible developed. People didn't realize the power of military equipment! Human lives are worthless on the battlefield. None of us are heroes." "How did we survive?" Part of it is out of fear of war, fear that others will perceive their own fear, and the belief in human nature, the trust between comrades-in-arms, not to let each other down." "History will eventually prove that this war is not worthwhile. "The only thing that really bothered me was when I was demobilized and walked into a store. The clerk was a young man I knew. He said,'Where have you been recently? Are you on night shift?'"
