The plot of "Poetry" is based on real events. A few years ago, in a small city in South Korea, a group of young boys raped several middle school girls. However, I have never found a way to put this matter into a movie, and I can also make it into an old-fashioned movie that can be seen everywhere. It may be more successful commercially, but that is not the way I make movies. . One day during my trip in Japan, when I turned on the TV in a hotel room while reading a book, suddenly a word popped into my mind-poetry! A channel on the TV is showing some programs for insomnia travelers. Some ordinary pictures appeared on the TV: a quiet river, birds flying, fishermen throwing fishing nets to catch fish, and soothing and quiet music in the background. . Suddenly I thought of how to deal with this brutal incident in the movie. He needs to deal with it through poetry. In other words, I want to express this violent incident through "beauty" rather than "ugliness." The main character is an old lady in her 60s who started learning how to write poetry for the first time in her life. His grandson committed this violent crime. These characters make up the basic plot, and the name "poem" also appeared in my mind.
The heroine of "Poetry" Miko is a woman suffering from Alzheimer's disease. She has to fight against the disease and face the fact that her grandson participated in the rape of female classmates. At the same time, she also became interested in poetry. When she entered the world of poetry, although she still seemed to be in the world of ordinary people. But she tried her best to find and express the hidden beauty, and then she slowly realized that true beauty is actually inseparable from filth, ugliness, and pain. He also realized that beauty is not obvious. At the same time, it does not only belong to the individual, but also relates to the relationship with him. After learning about this, she began to gradually deepen into a mysterious realm that made him feel very cordial and comfortable. At the same time, she began to lose her memory and language, getting closer and closer to her death. Forgetting is a form of death. I think that forgetting this opponent will make writing a poem for the first time become an adventure in her unfortunate life, revealing the contradictions and irony in her cruel life.
Once I think of an idea, before I start writing, I will store it in my head for a long time, or let him slowly mature in his head. How long will it be stored? It depends on the situation, and it may take several years. I often forget them until a certain day. They jumped out and knocked on the door. It's time to come out, we are mature, please open the door. However, after hearing their knocks, I didn’t start writing right away. I still have to keep thinking about taking notes, knowing that the structure of the story is clear enough and the details are rich enough. At this stage, the most important thing for me I want to tell others the outline of this story. This is a way of collecting feedback. People will have various reactions. Usually I can tell from the reactions whether people like the story. One more thing that must be done is to find more details that I have never thought of through investigation and research. After the work is ready, I can finally start to write. Once I really start writing, it doesn’t take much. Time can complete the script.
The protagonist Miko asked her poetry teacher, how can I find true beauty? To a certain extent, her question represents my question and my attitude towards making movies. Through the lens of the camera, the subject we are facing looks a little different, and often the reality becomes too beautiful. However, I hope that my film does not make the reality we face, the life we face, and the living space unreal. I hope that my films will show people themselves and let the audience feel and accept this hidden beauty. If I have my own style and characteristics, then they must come from my film attitude. In my work, I want to show that everyone has his own dignity. Even the fragile protagonists in my story are working hard for their dignity. They did not succumb to political and social violence, did not succumb to stereotypes, or even succumbed to the boundaries of God or life. They struggled desperately and did not succumb to meaningless lives. I write novels, scripts and movies for this reason.
