Thoughts on "The Fantasy Drifting of Juvenile Pi"

Today, I was fortunate to participate in the premiere of "The Fantasy Drifting of Young Pi" directed by Ang Lee. After watching the film, I was deeply moved, shocked for a long time, and moved by the book.
At the beginning of the film, many animals appeared. Behind the animals are artificially painted walls. With unique Indian songs, the story is brought into the background environment of an Indian zoo, where the protagonist’s family was born and followed. The introduction of the name's origin serves as a pavement. When I heard the crisp and cheerful harp sound as the deer jumped and rhythmic, I began to notice the fit between the visual and auditory effects of this film. In the following plot, the change of scenes and the coordination of music constantly bring the emotions of the audience into the inner world of the protagonist, and feel the mental development of the protagonist pi.
At the beginning, the film tells the story of Pi encountered a shipwreck when he was a teenager, and his family was killed in that shipwreck. Only he and a Bengal tiger were left with the crowd. Although there are many loopholes in the story, because the scenes are full of fantasy, the story is even more bizarre, so I take this fantasy drifting process as a natural science fiction. At that time, I thought this film was about the desire to survive, the beauty of friendship between humans and tigers, and the courage to face adversity. Later, when the young pi told the investigators another version of the story, I felt a sense of astonishment, and I began to think about which story was true, so that I gradually understood that this movie actually told far more than that.
From the first story, many loopholes can be found. It is impossible for the crew to leave the lifeboat when the boat breaks down and is about to sink. Tigers and other animals are locked in a cage and it is impossible to run out. It is impossible for the survival manual of the lifeboat to tell survivors how to tame the beasts. Bananas cannot float on the water. Why doesn’t the tiger eat the jackal when it’s in the same shed with the jackal? It’s impossible for people on the boat to see the king squid eating whales in the depths of the ocean. Plants absorb human corpses and will not leave their teeth in the fruit. There is also that food. The existence of Human Island and so on. But the second story seemed reasonable. The crew did not run out of the lifeboat, nor did the animals run out of the cage. His mother might have seen the child go out alone, so she was uneasy and escaped temporarily. Later, she swam on the lifeboat with a banana. For a chef who only eats meat, compressed biscuits are not considered food at all, so he would rather eat mice than people. Until he saw Pi's mother was eaten by sharks, he felt remorse, so he let Pi kill. Revenge yourself. The first story seems to intentionally set up these loopholes to let the audience understand that the story is fake and it is virtual but beautiful, while the second story is cruel in reality. And these two stories are pi's personal experience. It can be seen that the first story tells the subjective inner world of pi, while the second story is a bloody fact that actually happened. A zebra is a sailor, a monkey is his mother, a jackal is a cook, and a tiger is Pi. Then who is "pi"?
Therefore, I can't help but rethink the context of this whole story. Pi was a man of faith when he was a child. He believed in gods and love to get peace of mind. Later, he fed the tiger awakened his father and made his father feel that he should let his child recognize reality earlier, otherwise he might encounter it later. Danger. So from the time he saw the Bengal tiger prey, the tiger, which is also a kind of realism, was deeply implanted in Pi's head. So from then on, his spiritual world has diverged. Two thoughts are fighting in his head, so he has been confused and unhappy, so he will ask the monkey later on the lifeboat, what about your child? Yes, Tiger, which "pi" is your true self? Later he met a beloved girl. He understood the girl's dance from a logical point of view, and the girl laughed. This laugh may be that Pi’s reason for following her is to know the meaning of her dance. It may be that Pi’s rational understanding of dance is aroused by the joy of Pi’s rational understanding of dance. It may also be that Pi is good at thinking differently. have it. Later, Pi showed the girl a tiger, and the girl’s words reignited Pi’s childhood emotional thinking. Maybe at that moment Pi felt that he was right when he was a child, but reality hit him hard at this time. He had to leave India and leave the girl to a strange place. His sensual thinking also had to accept rational reality. .
Later, he encountered a shipwreck and cruel reality, especially when the chef killed his mother. Pi's reality completely defeated his emotional side. He took the knife and killed the chef. At this time, the one in his heart had been hidden for a long time. The Bengal tiger completely came out of the cage to gain the upper hand. This coincides with the question of why the Bengal tiger suddenly appeared after the jackal killed the monkey in the first story. That is to say, the "tiger" is actually the cruel reality in Pi's heart. On the rational side, "pi" itself is perceptual and faithful.
After the appearance of the "tiger", the "tiger" has always had the upper hand. He wanted to tame but has been unable to do anything. Even if he coexisted peacefully with the "tiger" later, it was limited to this. Of course, the survival manual does not tell "pi" how to tame the beast. It is just a process in which the sensibility of "pi" has been trying to conquer rationality. However, judging from the performance of "tiger", it seems that rationality has the upper hand in the end. Even when the whale appeared, he was just sad that his things were taken away, but he did not sigh the beauty of the whale like an audience. This contrast also shows the rational mind of "pi" at this stage from the side.
So he drifted like this for several days, until one day "pi" saw a ship, and he tried to get in touch with that ship, but in the end he watched the ship disappear to the horizon. At that time, "pi" was lost. Helpless and even desperate. It may be that people need faith most to bring new life to themselves when they are desperate. In this way, one night after a few days, "pi" saw "tiger" looking at the sea, and "pi" also looked at peace like a mirror. The surface of the water, where he saw the memories. The king cuttlefish eating whales is a picture he imagined. The whales throwing out the animals in the zoo are the associations of "pi" seeing the creatures in the sea. The associations drive memories. Memories keep appearing. He even saw his girlfriend. The girl who evoked his childhood memories of perceptual thinking, "pi" entered from the girl's Yintang, which is also the "Dianhui" wisdom in Eastern culture, to feel her soul. Later, he recalled the shipwreck that caused him to lose everything. Maybe he finally realized that he had lost not only his property, animals, and family members, but more importantly, he lost his original faith, that is, this moment," The sensibility of "pi" has played a role again and even has affected him now. The director made the ship always appear in the center of the picture, and even the morning sun rose the next day but never stopped. Show how deeply this idea is imprinted in the heart of "pi", maybe from then on, "pi" has the illusion of being on a boat with tigers, monkeys, zebras and jackals in his heart. Long-term loneliness and the helplessness and despair brought about by reality make it easy for people to be immersed in their own subjective consciousness. He would rather believe that this illusion is real and the world is beautiful, and that is why he has the hope of living.
So when he encountered a storm and saw the divine light appearing in the sky, he worshipped the sky. At this time, his sensibility completely defeated his reason. Therefore, after the storm, "pi" was safe and sound, but "tiger" was completely wounded.
Then "pi" inexplicably boarded an island. Director Ang Lee described the behavior and mentality of "pi" very delicately here. After seeing the island, "pi"'s first reaction was not "I was rescued", but They see what to eat, and when they reach the water pool, they don’t forget to drink a few sips of fresh water while swimming. Tigers also have enough ferrets to eat. This is like a paradise on earth for them. But at night, the clear water turns into a poison pool, and the forest hides murderous intent. "Pi" calls it "Cannibal Island."
This island is likely to be imagined by "pi" after choosing to follow his beliefs. It is his understanding of the real world. It is heralding the real society. The ferrets on the island are like people in our society. Everyone looks at foreign things curiously with wide eyes, but is ignorant of the dangers of these foreign things. The tiger ate the ferret, but the other ferrets were nearby but ignored it, as if it had nothing to do with itself. This symbolized the indifference of human society. People have worked so hard to create wealth, but they are often watched and even plundered by others. Just as "Pi" put up a bed on a tree, but was constantly invaded by weasels. "Pi" was disgusted and wanted to drive these weasels away, but was helpless. Hundreds of rushes are endless, seemingly funny but uniquely ironic, and thought-provoking. The food sources of animals and plants on this island are the carcasses of others, and all the beauty is only appearance. Looking at this island from a distance, it looks like a giant's corpse lying on the sea. The island itself may mean death. This is the reality, it makes people sink, it is lost, beautiful and cruel, crowded but indifferent, prosperity comes at the cost of bones, full of temptation but murderous. But people do not have to rely on those vanities, desires, and interests to live better. In fact, we still have the spiritual pursuit of the subjective world. So pi finally chose to leave the island and leave the so-called realism.
Finally "pi" finally reached the shore and came to Mexico. He saw the "tiger" standing in the forest watching, and then he fainted. After "pi" woke up, of course he couldn't see the tiger, because the person who saved him sent him to the hospital. At this time, he has returned to reality. "Tiger" is just another self in his fantasy. In fact, he was only one person from beginning to end. . The "pi" at that time yearned for beauty and returned to faith, so when the investigator asked him drifting past, he naturally told the investigator the fantasy in his mind as reality. He had to tell the investigator until the investigator pressed people. Accepting the cruel and indifferent reality, and tearfully and painfully telling about the unbearable experience. The location where Pi was rescued was actually not in Mexico, but Kenting. In the screen, Kenting was almost completely filmed. Coupled with the dreamy scenes with unique oriental characteristics in the whole film, it implicitly reveals the feelings of Director Ang Lee's return to his roots.
This film devotes a lot of space to depicting and describing the story 1 in the pi fantasy, so that the audience is full of identification with that story, but the simple narration of story 2 in the last few minutes is a magical touch, guiding people to compare and go. Reflect and discover. This kind of plot arrangement allows the audience to feel and recognize the beauty of the subjective world and find the long-lost innocence, which can be described as ingenious.
After the theater ended, I didn't want to leave for a while, and I couldn't let it go for a long time. As a 3D film, the new experience brought by new technology to the audience is very attractive, but I feel that this so-called attraction is insignificant compared to the design and connotation of the film itself. The blind pursuit of 3D and special effects is no different. Seek to the end. However, "The Fantastic Drifting of Youth Pi" cleverly uses the realism of this 3D film, such as the scene where a tiger pounces on a jackal. The director used 3D special effects to shock the audience, and felt lingering fears when reviewing the plot. With such an effect, the emotional explosion of pi in reality is just right. In the same way, because of the realism of the 3D effect, the audience is always hanging on the line during the confrontation between the tiger and the juvenile pi. This kind of emotion is actually the feeling of the protagonist pi at the time. It makes the audience immersive and admirable. . Computer special effects are used to render and enhance the atmosphere of the scene in the magical scene that describes the first story. Brings an extremely gorgeous sense of fantasy to the audience, and such a scene is in line with the illusion world of pi. While expressing the theme, promoting the plot, and rendering emotions, although it also quietly implies the unreality of story 1, it makes People are unforgettable or even believable.
It can be said that "The Fantasy Drifting of Juvenile Pi" gives people an all-round three-dimensional thinking.
The protagonist pi comes from π. π is the circumference ratio, which is the relationship between the diameter and the circumference of a circle. It is approximately equal to 3.14, but we can never calculate how much π is equal to, just as science can never completely describe the world. But from π we can think of a circle, thus of the earth, and even of life. Sometimes a person's life is to draw a circle, and often walk a circle and eventually return to the original point. Pi is drifting and returning. His perceptual and rational thinking are constantly struggling and fighting, but in the end he listened to the voice of his heart returning from reality to faith and from the ocean to the mainland. Maybe each of us has a "Bengal tiger" in our heart, and we also have a "juvenile pi". It's just that the "tiger" in our hearts often prevails. We are even willing to stay on the "Cannibal Island" and enjoy the temptation of food and clear springs and be buried in it. This movie awakens people. When we are lost, we must try to listen to the voice of our hearts, when we are alone and helpless. At that time, we must follow our own beliefs, and we must be able to return to our inner beautiful paradise at the right time in the chaotic, complicated and temptation reality.
