Journey of life

The first contact with Angelopoulos was ten years ago, and it was the journey of Ulysses' life. At the beginning, I was attracted by the name "Ulysses." How can we understand a journey of life in five days or within two hours of the film? When I was in the second grade, I got into the cinema with strange and excited emotions (because the film was restricted at the time). Later I learned that the ticket window was willing to sell tickets to me: Kaohsiung was the best (it was in Hanshen Underground at the time). On the third floor, due to the fact that art films have been showing, the box office is not good, and it closed in less than two years.) In the huge movie theater, there are only two people in the huge venue: me and the projectionist.

It was a wonderful experience to watch this film with the projectionist, especially when the protagonist was showing the film he had been looking for for a long time with his hand crank.

After watching this film, I frantically searched for all Angelopoulos' shadows. But at that time there was no Internet, no VCD, and the only source we could attract was the record film shop. I collected all the films he released during the ten years.

The experience below was written five years ago, and it was about five years after the first time I watched the film. During this period, we have undergone many changes in film: many Taiwanese films are committed to being shown in bookstores, but TV video shows are publicly premiered in movie theaters; TV shows always want to be filmed, but movies are rapidly shifting to digitalization; and then It is the drama genre that is more and more like a documentary, while the documentary is more and more fictional.

Looking back now, many changes have gradually emerged in our lives and become accustomed, but when everyone held the pilgrimage with the same tone and gestures, we were not too moved.

-------------------------------------------------- ----
Ulysses'Gaze is a film that focuses on the pursuit of negatives.
First of all, why is the so-called first volume of the negatives important? Especially in this time of war and chaos?

And this kind of "gaze" represents some faces and events. It presents a meeting between a person and the world-if we disappear the memory of the image What will happen? Or put it this way, what happens when a person has no weight in the past?

What attracts me to the script is that he does not describe life in terms of the conflicting aspects of war. There are no war scenes in it, but only the sound of bombing, debris, and people running on the road. The director regards war and turmoil as the background of a major era and the scene of the movie. At this time, all people still maintain their basic life status, and still have their ideals and pursuits. In fact, most war movies ignore this. One point, even in different times, in fact, everyone's little life is still the main axis of life.

"You can find here, you are either very conviction, or you are completely desperate for life." Do you remember what the projectionist who died last said.

All the stories in the movie are just that he is constantly searching. There are only many symbols that are unattainable, interspersed in this journey: there are his past, his memories of his family, and some people on unrelated roads. thing. He is also a referential memory of his family. He said that the essence of wandering is to keep leaving but at the same time keep going back to the past, a certain absolute spiritual obscurity. In one scene, all relatives gathered in the hall, everyone was dancing and singing, and then disappeared in the whirl and dance one by one. In the saddest part of life and death, the more people sang loudly.

There are also various women who appeared on the road who were wrong with him, did they find them, they all have the same face. This represents a familiar connection. When people are wandering, this subtle connection makes people step on the world safely.

The director has always used a spectator method to achieve the effect of gaze, without dealing with any slow motion. When there is no background music, moving the mirror slowly pulls out the time to flow, whether the picture and color are thrilling or dull, but they are all true.

There is no background music in the real world, and people are walking, there is no contrasting hint of pain or joy. The director expresses a speed of "movie contrasting with life," rather than the "speed of thoughts and events" that will be magnified when others watch it.

In addition, music is actually very important in this film. Although there are very few appearances, the soundtrack is used to quickly deal with the passage of time and history. In fact, the whole film is based on the same key melody and brings out nine variations. Elini Karainrou's film soundtrack has always been classic.

Finally, it was shot. The protagonist thought that he had found a "familiar belonging", and when he began to feel affection for the old projectionist's family, they died.

Didn't he say at the beginning-"My destination is another departure." The wandering people are destined to have nowhere to go.

I watched this movie twice, both on the big screen. I didn't dare to watch the tape alone. The
first time I watched it was the year when I was wandering away from home. I cried in the huge movie theater.
Even though sometimes I feel sleepy slowly, sometimes it is shaken by the simple images shot in the film, which are
like documentary photos, but they are connected in another way.
I see it very well, perhaps because I can Experience the kind of wandering.

Didn't the taxi driver say to the whole mountain like this in the end?
-"I'm alone, come and have a cookie!"

Cheers,
to Theo Angelopoulos!

Ulysses' Gaze quotes

  • A: I didn't expect to see you suddenly, I guess... For a moment, I thought I was dreaming of you... Like I did all these past years... Do you remember the railway station?... You were shivering in the rain, like now... The wind was blowing hard... I was going away, but I meant to come back soon... And then I got lost, wandering along strange routes... If I could stretch out my hands, I would touch you... And time will be held again... But something is holding me back... I wish I could tell you I'd return... But something is holding me back... The journey isn't over, not yet!

  • A: Good night, good night... Parting is such sweet sorrow... that I shall say good night, till it be tomorrow... sleep dwell upon thine eyes, peace in thy breasts... would I were sleep and peace, so sweet to rest... Hence will I to my ghostly father's cell... his help to crave, and my dear hap to tell!
