Little Fish

Since the opening of Fox Studios in 1999, there have been many Hollywood movies shot in Sydney, but most of them use factory scenes, such as the establishment of "Star Wars" alien cities or "Love in the Moulin Rouge" in the movie theater. "In the old days of Paris, even the real-life images shot in Sydney have to be transformed into a future city like The Matrix. There are not many movies with Sydney as the background.

Now showing in various places in Australia, Little Fish starring Cate Blanchett is a movie set in Sydney. I was used to her acting as the Queen (Elizabeth) and the Aviator (The Aviator). I suddenly saw her acting as an Australian woman who used to take drugs and commit crimes. I found her plasticity is really amazing.

The title Little Fish not only refers to the small fish that are at a lower level in the food chain, go with the flow, and are easily eaten by big fish; it also refers to the small fish-shaped plastic bottles used in sushi restaurants that appear repeatedly in the film and are used to contain drugs. .

Most of the movies were shot in real locations in Sydney, such as Cabramatta, Chinatown, and the city center. Seeing that the familiar places are all on the mirror, it feels very strange.

The movie depicts a woman who has been abstaining from drugs for many years and hopes to borrow money from the bank to open a shop, but she runs into trouble because of her criminal record. A four-year old boyfriend of Vietnamese descent, suddenly returned richly, hoping to fix it with her. At the same time, her stepfather, who had a good relationship with her, failed to detoxify at the same time. In a drug-ridden community, with stepfathers, younger brothers, and old boyfriends all involved in drugs, it’s easier said than done to avoid falling into the drug sea again?

Hugo Weaving, who plays the stepfather, is Agent Smith from The Matrix. This time, he plays a retired rugby star with a heavy Australian accent and a beard. If you don't look at the cast, you really can't recognize him. Cate Blanchett's clothes and conversation are like some small Australians who are struggling in the suburbs. Several scenes of her shopping in the mall, she is like any ordinary person who meets on the street every day. Many actors have very similar appearances, behaviors, and conversations, and they are very high-level. Apart from the gray theme of the movie, it will not give you any good feelings after watching it. It is a good film that is worth recommending.

Cate Blanchett graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Art co-operated with my alma mater UNSW. Looking at her graduation year, maybe she used to wait for a bus outside the school with me in 91-92. NIDA is Australia's premier performing arts school. Mel Gibson, Geoffrey Rush, etc. are all graduates of the school. NIDA, like Fox Studios, is located next to Anzac Parade, only a five-minute drive away. In recent years, many blockbuster films have been filmed in Sydney. There is a great demand for people in front of and behind the scenes. Many NIDA graduates work in the studio. A few years ago, the college was rebuilt and completed, and Mel Gibson also came back to cut the ribbon. The design of the new building is distinctive, and it also won the architectural award that year. I should also introduce it when I have time.

Excellent indie film plus Blanchett's charisma

I revisited it, but it is actually quite remarkable. The reason why Blanchett took this small-cost Australian production is probably because of a personal relationship with the director. Her film debut seems to be adapted from the director’s popular Australia that year. The TV series seems to be a nostalgic person.
