Churchill's Choice - A Short Review of "Darkest Hour"

This film restores Churchill's attitude towards the Nazis and the historical scene of the situation at that time very well in World War II.

The most worth mentioning is: Gary Oldman who plays Churchill is very vivid and restores Churchill's image, and at the same time, it also shows a staunch politician who shows the fragile side of human nature under great pressure. In the film, the director used a dark frame such as a door frame to frame Churchill in it many times, showing the difficult situation he faced and his inner anxiety, stress and helplessness.

Another clue in the film is the match, which symbolizes hope. At first, Churchill accidentally lost it, and then kept showing up until he finally borrowed fire from the people in the subway, and found his own match on the table in the map room, symbolizing the rekindling of hope.

In addition, the lighting and photography of the film are very brilliant, echoing the "Darkest Hour" in the title, most of the scenes in the film are in a dark room, and then focus the audience's sight through more concentrated lighting, which also improves the The contrast of the picture makes the picture look comfortable.

I think what the movie should celebrate is courage. The king's courage is to choose to stay in England with his people, rather than go to Canada; Churchill's courage is to stick to the belief of victory in such a crisis situation; the secretary's courage is to know that his brother died in the front line. But instead of shedding tears, he insisted on his work; the courage of the British people is the will to never compromise and fight to the death. As said at the end of the film: success is not the end, failure is not the end, only the courage to move forward will last forever.

In fact, it is the British version of "The Founding of a Nation", more refined and more human. Churchill demonstrated the political art based on rhetoric. If words have power, it is only because these words express what other people want to say and can't.

At 7 points, Gary Allman’s performance is that I couldn’t associate this character with Gary Oldman from beginning to end. This is not Oldman, this is Churchill, too powerful. The whole is a normal Oscar-style biopic. The photography of Joe Wright's movies is still very sophisticated, and the photography is very dark. It is also very burning when it should be burning, and the ending is a bit warm.

Darkest Hour quotes

  • Winston Churchill: Turning once again to the question of invasion I would observe that there has never been a period in all these long centuries of which we boast, when an absolute guarantee against invasion could have been given to our people. I have, myself full confidence that if all do their duty, if nothing is neglected, and if the best arrangements are made, as they are being made, we shall prove ourselves once more able to defend our island home, to ride out the storm of war, and to outlive the menace of tyranny if necessary for years, if necessary alone. At any rate, that is what we are going to try to do. That is the resolve of His Majesty's Government every man of them. That is the will of Parliament and the nation. The British Empire and the French Republic, linked together in their cause and in their need, will defend to the death their native soil, aiding each other like good comrades to the utmost of their strength. Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious apparatus of Nazi rule, we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills. We shall never surrender, and if, which I do not for a moment believe, this island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old!

  • Clement Atlee: [on Neville Chamberlain] Owing to his years of inactivity and incompetence, we find him personally responsible... personally responsible for leaving this nation ruinously unprepared to face the present Nazi peril! We are at war, Mr. Speaker, at war. And leaving aside whether he is fit to be a leader in peacetime, he has proved himself incapable of leading us in wartime!
