turmoil of faith

Too bad I can only give 5 stars at most.

Confrontation and Compromise of Faith

I just read two chapters of "A Brief History of Humanity" yesterday, and I used the contents of the book to analyze it.

The reason why human beings form a group is because of the existence of a "story", and everyone in the group believes in this story, and the group has vitality.

For Colonel and Saito, born in different cultures, naturally they heard different stories. The Colonel's story is about the Geneva Conventions, and Saito's is about Bushido. The so-called Tao is different and does not conspire, but when they must conspire, conflicts will inevitably arise, and each person will only follow the form of the story he believes. This is where the success of the story lies.

Believing in your own story religiously and being willing to give everything for it is the origin of those epic stories. In the end, the colonel was swept to death by random guns, and Saito cut himself to death without completing the task. Both are heroes in their own stories. If it weren't for the round field of the medics, the conflict would have erupted.

For Schears, these are all compromises, and perhaps this is the story of "freedom" they believe. Everything is for the maximization of interests, follow the local customs, and follow the trend. "There is no civilization here, that set will not work." If your own set is doomed to fail, you will suffer if you insist, and you may be able to follow other people's rules for the time being.

It's not that Schells has no principles. What he believes in is the freedom of his own life, "how can I live like a person", and he will defend his own life to the death. Of course, he lost his mind and was beaten to death on the beach in the end. On, people are inevitably a little bloody, otherwise they are too useless.

In the first game, the colonel won and Saito compromised.

The collapse and confusion of faith

After the bridge was built, the colonel had a passage that showed the complexity and contradictions of his inner beliefs at that time:

Sometimes you feel back to the starting point, hesitant, you ask yourself what is the meaning of life, what is the difference between this and that, compared with other occupations. I don't know if it's right to think this way, but I have to admit, I've been thinking about these

In "They Never Grow Old", it shows that veterans can't find their own value after being discharged from the army, and can't understand why the war exists.

In addition to the "story" telling us to fight for faith, war is more of a bloody reality. People are forgetful, and chaotic life will wipe out the fighting spirit. Therefore, the non-commissioned officers will arrange things for the soldiers as much as possible, and they need to be occupied to maintain a relatively high level of discipline and purity.

At first, the colonel built the bridge because of his understanding of war, but in the process of building he was attracted by another "story". The bridge's exquisiteness and solid existence made him realize "value". a different understanding. He started to build bridges for another reason, to leave something to the world.

Since it's a movie, we can't let him go so easily. Letting him discover the existence of explosives himself immediately put him in a dilemma, and the two "story" began to collide violently.

What kind of ending is a good ending, to explode or not to explode. The movie uses a tricky approach, but it doesn't really make that choice.

The ending of the novel is that Nicholson was injured and still fell over the British commandos, thus protecting the bridge; and the ending of the movie script was changed to Nicholson's shot and fell down and just pressed the detonating device of the explosive, thus protecting the bridge. The bridge on the River Kwai was blown up.

The rhythm in the front is slightly delayed, but then the pace of the plot quickens and interlocks. One of the best in the slave film category

A man's dream is to build a bridge, and in the end his task is to blow it up again, that's what war is all about - madness.

The Bridge on the River Kwai quotes

  • Major Hughes: Jennings has a plan, sir. He seems to think...

Colonel Nicholson: Yes, I'm sure Jennings has a plan. But escape? Where, into this jungle? That fellow Saito was right: no need for barbed wire or fence, one chance in a hundred of survival. I'm sure a man of Commander Shears' experience will attest to that.

Commander Shears: I'd say the odds against a successful escape are about 100 to one. But may I add another word, Colonel? The odds against survival in this camp are even worse.

  • Commander Shears: I can think of a lot of things to call Saito, but "reasonable"... that's a new one.
