Are you really awake?

Tom has such a line in "Vanilla Sky": "I don't know what's real." In the movie, his characters always have difficulty distinguishing what is a dream and what is reality.

It is said that every person will have at least 3-5 dreams every night. There are about 7.8 billion people in the world. That is to say, about 31.2 billion dreams occur in the world every night.

Have you ever had a dream that felt more real than what happened in the real world? Is the dream real, or the reality we think is real?

2300 years ago, Zhuangzi raised this philosophical question through the story of Zhuang Zhou's dream of a butterfly: how do people know the truth. If the dream is real enough, it is difficult for a person to know that he is dreaming. Or maybe it was actually a lucid dream about the unity of man and nature.

In 1641, Descartes mentioned a similar view in "Meditations on the First Philosophy": people perceive the world through consciousness, and everything in the world is indirectly perceived, so the truth of the external world may also be false.

The movie "The Matrix" also shows a virtual world that looks real but is actually a "Matrix". Because of the connection of the brain nerves, the signals of hearing, sight, smell, taste, touch, and psychology feel so real.

Seeing this, have you started to think about whether the reality you think is true?

In fact, there is a word in medicine called "Oneirophrenia", which describes the mental state of being unable to distinguish between dreams and reality.

I still remember one night when I felt like I was waking up from a dream, only to realize the next morning that it was a multi-layered dream within a dream. The first time I felt like I was awake, I was actually still dreaming. This kind of multi-layered dream-in-dream often appears in the movie "Inception".

After that dream-in-dream, I kept wondering if we now feel that the real world is just a dream that feels more real. Or, one day, our brains will privately mash up the plot of the dream with the actual event, making it difficult for us to remember what actually happened.

If what feels real right now is just a dream, I'd rather never wake up. If the brain can tamper with memories, I hope it erases all sadness and leaves only happy fragments.

  • Julie: Don't ever say that word. I will never come over and bring you chicken soup and fuck your brains out again.

  • Dr. Curtis McCabe: I'm real. I'm... I'm... mortality as home entertainment? THIS CANNOT BE THE FUTURE. Can it? CAN IT?
