It seems that all serious philosophers and sociologists in the West inevitably make pessimistic predictions about the future of human society, which seems to have a huge impact on the film. Sam's poor and weak body and the huge body of the demon king in his dream seem to be telling the helplessness and suffering of weak individuals under a powerful system. Sam found out that the face of the demon king was his own, which also seemed to imply that Sam also helplessly became the system and the Part of the anti-institutional blend. An anti-centralization, anti-bureaucratic, anti-government, anti-system, anti-mainstream culture film, the end of the film reminds me of The Matrix, Blade Runner... That kind of sad feeling believes that everyone in the system can profound experience.
At the end of the film, Sam was turned into a vegetative person, and his mind lived in his own utopia forever, but his body still did not escape the powerful system. This is also the director's pessimistic understanding of contemporary society and the prediction that there is no way out for the future, which reminds me of a lyric from the California Hotel: You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.
