First of all, we must admit the difficulty of presenting the historical fact of "Assassination of Hitler". Not only because this story has been put on the screen several times before, but also because of the danger in the script stage. Sadly, the script failed to achieve conquest and stumbled.
why?
Because when everyone knows the result, there must be a new dynamic to pull the audience into the story instead of suspense. What is this motivation? Valkyrie gave only one answer: grit and determination as Colonel Stauffenberg failed due to hesitant complicity and coincidence of fate (Hitler's fate). In short, a great man and his tragic failure. But the audience still has to sympathize with the hero's tragic and solemn character - from beginning to end, he does not hesitate or compromise... His perfect personality is also unkind and almost unreal. The script did not leave the protagonist with the words of "difficult choices" - imagine that as a professional soldier from a prestigious family, a senior officer who swore allegiance to the head of state, can there be no process in his heart from obedience to "betrayal"?
This lack can't be covered up with clichés like "anti-fascist spirit".
The second is the lack of environmental construction. Antonioni probably said: "Without my environment, there would be no character." There is hardly a decent World War II scene in the whole film - although the desert battlefield at the beginning is the scene where the colonel loses his left eye and right hand, it is not directly related to the theme of the film. Relevance - because the protagonist was sentenced to the oath of allegiance to Hitler because of his patriotism, not out of personal grudges. Just imagine how important a narrative and emotional function the war ravaged and devastated once played in many successful works.
In this film, Berlin, Germany, is clean and minimal, even rude. Although the devastation may not be new, it may not have been devastation in July 1944, but the film expresses the essence of truth. The self-destruction of Germany under Hitler's rule did not show itself, so how could the actions of the protagonist not be suspicious?
Let’s talk about these two points first, it’s too late and I’ll add it later.
