black umbrella

In the whole movie, apart from Aiken's strong defense, one of the most tender places is that before Mary was executed, the soldiers held up this black umbrella for her. In a quiet and icy atmosphere, a small, black cloth umbrella was opened, like a ritual, the middle-aged soldier, always walking carefully behind Mary's left, to avoid strong rays of light entered her weak eyes. This ritual accompanies Mary on her way to the gallows, saving her eyes from the irritation that comes with being in the dark for many days.
How ironic, people originally hoped that the sun from the dark clouds would bring warmth, just as they hoped that the haze of war would dissipate as soon as possible, but Mary had to rely on this little black umbrella to cover her for safety.
Like Aiken running around in the ocean of powerful hatred where the president died, seeking justice for Mary, a little black umbrella, a floating island.
What a powerful hatred!
There is no law in war.
But where did they kill a murderer, what they killed was obviously a mother.
"I always thought they wouldn't kill her."
"You're not her son, why should you stand up for her?"
Watching this movie on Mother's Day, I finally cried so much that I couldn't calm down for a long time. Do we really think we have grown up? The consequences of the willful things we do, we really have the courage to bear, can we really afford it? Also, how many things have we done, and the consequences really need to be borne by the mother?
Also, can you hold up that black umbrella for your mother in the torrent?

It's drowsy to watch, people who are not familiar with history can't afford to hurt.

The Conspirator quotes

  • Frederick Aiken: You're my witness! Should I not expect you to tell me the truth?

  • Edwin Stanton: Young man... always indebted to you for your courage in the field, but you must learn to tread lightly.

Frederick Aiken: Tread lightly? I will not tread lightly. You have predetermined her fate.

Edwin Stanton: Mary Surratt's fate rests entirely with the Commission. My concern is preserving our Union.

Frederick Aiken: Why did I fight for the Union if my rights aren't assured? You tell me.

Edwin Stanton: Fine words for rallying the troops, not for running a nation. They assassinated our president, and someone must be held accountable. The people want that.

Frederick Aiken: It's John Surratt you want. You don't even want Mary.

Edwin Stanton: I'll settle for either one.
