[Strong spoilers throughout] What the hell is this movie about?

The candidate for writing the thesis, and Jake Gyllenhaal who played Brokeback Mountain is the protagonist, and the theme of the introduction seems to be related to the discussion of dual personalities, so I reserved a seat to watch the preview (officially released on 3/14), I have a major The idea of but not sure, mainly because of the biggest metaphor of the film - the spider is not clear.

It should be said that the biggest suspense of the film lies in whether the two men with exactly the same appearance in the film are the same person (psychological film) or indeed two people (conspiracy film). Before watching it, I tended to be a psychological film, but after seeing it halfway through, I doubted it for a while and thought it was a conspiracy film, and it turned out to be a psychological film in the end. 90 minutes, short and powerful.

Warning: Strong spoilers throughout.

The viewing records are as follows:

1.Chaos is order yet undeciphered. It is the first picture with a single line of words. I thought this thing had something to do with the theme. It seems not.

2. Yellow city vista, somewhat surreal interior, a group of people are watching a woman come from a table, holding a plate, inside is a larger-than-usual spider. Everyone looked at her, and so did the male lead. (Later, I saw a movie review on imdb that this was a strip club, and I had a feeling that it was like this. I was looking forward to explaining the symbol of spiders in the future, but actually there was no)

3. The protagonist Adam appeared, a university professor, and the content of the lecture was dictatorship is all about control idea and knowledge or something.

4. EXTERIOR, TONS OF YELLOW, trolley wire net, like a spider's web. The music is rhythmic and heavy, Adam sits at the table, the camera pans, and he kisses his girlfriend at the door. To sit and eat, how ru, i'm good. (The overall style is established, and there is very little talk later.)

5. The same class content as before came again, with the picture of life: work, class, and dinner sex. (seems to express the repetition of life)

6. A colleague asked Adam if he liked watching movies, and he hesitantly recommended a movie called when there's a will, there's a way (I thought the title implied

something , but it didn't) 7.Adam I still went to the disc store, went home, corrected my thesis, my girlfriend went to bed, and watched a movie by myself. A fast-moving shot from his movie to his girlfriend's bedroom highlights the time shift. After reading it, he went back to the house to take off his clothes and asked for sex again, his girlfriend told him to stop, and then left angrily for some reason.

8. The picture changes to the Hotel Reception, a woman in red, black hat and white shawl. The picture is very bright, only the music is silent. Then Adam woke up, dreaming about the movie he was watching. Then he turned on the computer again to find the movie in his dream. Stop for a frame, the waiter in the background, has the exact same face as him, just without the beard.

9. In class, I won't repeat this time, I will talk about Hegel. The lecturing sound matched his pacing in full backlight, staying in that frame of the movie. He began to copy the cast list, and finally found the actor who looked like him on the Internet called Daniel Saint Claire. Then he began to look for photos, and found the photos of the beardless before (foreshadowing), and compared the photos on the website and found that they were exactly the same. Checked the contact address.

10.Adam drives to the optical shop, buys sunglasses, and goes to Daniel. Eating sandwiches and squatting in the car because there is no access card. The receptionist took him as Daniel and said he hadn't seen him for half a year. He lied that he wanted to take something, but there was something, and when he opened it, it was a personal confidential letter from Anthony Claire. He drove down again to Anthony's address and saw the twisted building. (appears later)

11.Adam called Anthony from a public phone downstairs, and a woman picked it up. During the conversation, it was revealed that Daniel was Anthony and Dainel was his stage name. And she is his wife. The wife also regarded him as Anthony and said that you should stop teasing what's going on. Then a few shots, music, pauses, black screen. (This method is repeated several times later)

12. Adam called Anthony again when he got home, and he answered it himself. He said that you and I sound similar. Anthony thought it was a harassing call and hung up. At home, his wife nervously asked him whose phone number was, and accused him nervously, asking are u seeing her again? (Foreshadowing, extramarital affairs?) The camera moves down and she is pregnant. (reveal through the lens language)

13. Adam searched for himself on the Internet, and the pregnant woman also found a note with Adam's name in her husband's bag, started searching, and found Adam's address. The next day the pregnant girl went to the school to find Adam. At the same time, Adam received a call from Anthony saying that he wanted to meet and make an appointment. The music goes up and down, and the camera of Adam and the pregnant woman goes back and forth until the pregnant woman sees Adam and the two chat. The pregnant woman seemed shocked (at the time I thought she was seeing someone who looked just like her husband), Adam acted like he didn't know her at all and asked how many months she was pregnant. (This paragraph made me suddenly think that it was indeed two people)

14. The pregnant woman called her husband tremblingly, but from the moment of the call, Adam just walked into the building door. If the audience can see Adam pick up the phone, then You can tell it's the same person. (Playing with the suspense to a small climax, I thought it was a double-cross, counter-spoofing to create a bigger surprise, in fact, it seems not that complicated, and it is from here that I want to know the result more and more) The pregnant woman said that I should go to see The guy you called, he looks exactly like you. (

Again, the hint is two people) 15.Adam had a nightmare (I didn't write down this content = =). In the heavily polluted fog outside, Adam drove to see Anthony, entered hotel room 221, sat on the bed, and looked at the door. The crack in the door, the sound of footsteps, the tension. (At this time, I think no one should come, but the director is still playing with this ultimate mystery and does not want to solve it.)

16. The sound of swiping the door card, Anthony came in, Adam was in the light and he was in the dark. (Actually, this is a metaphor, Adam is the main character?) The two face each other, Anthony is pressing step by step, Adam flinches. (Sub-personality prevails?) Then Anthony said show me ur hands (don't quite understand what this is for), then he said maybe we are brothers, Adam said No we are not. (Again show me ur hands?) Anthony Asked if he had a scar on his chest, and pulled up his clothes to show him, Adam seemed to be frightened and backed away, threw the personal confidential letter to Anthony before leaving, and drove away. At this moment, a motorcyclist in a red helmet drove past. (

Foreshadowing ) 17.Anthony went home and said to his pregnant wife, that person will not look for you again. Here it goes again: footage, music, pauses, black screen. Adam looked at the same scar on his body.

18. Anthony began to spy on Adam, himself wearing a red helmet and driving a motorcycle. Adam was seen kissing his girlfriend downstairs at Adam's house. He followed Adam's girlfriend to work. Adam went to his mother, who told him to stop dreaming of being an actor. (Strongly implying the same person)

19. An oversized spider hangs over the smoky city. (The main metaphor appears for the second time.)

20. Anthony went crazy at home and said did u fuck my wife to the bathroom mirror. (It was a bit inexplicable at the time) He found Adam's house and asked Adam why he was persevering in looking for him and why he was talking to his wife , asked him did u fuck my wife, and threatened to be bad for Adam's girlfriend, it means that you are not benevolent and I am not righteous.

21. Suddenly the camera turned, a man in a white shirt went out, and he did not explain which of the two people the white shirt was. When the camera turned, a man with white short sleeves was sitting on a chair. Drums, shaking. Suddenly it turned into a camera in the car, and I saw the twisted building again. Inside the car was a white shirt, with Adam's girlfriend, but when I got out of the car, it turned into a white short sleeve again. (This is almost the biggest evidence of the same person, and the conclusion can be basically concluded at this point)

22. Then Bai Short-sleeve entered the building of Anthony's house and lied that he did not have the key, and the security took him upstairs. In the elevator, the security guard suddenly told him a bunch of inexplicable things. i need to go back, but i'm not on the list or something. (I don't understand this until now) In a depressing corridor scene, the security guard told him to walk in front, but he pretended to be calm to hide that he didn't know the room number, but he had actually passed a little. (Then this should be Adam.)

23.Adam checked the wardrobe in the room, took off his pants, changed into a white shirt, put away the original clothes, and saw the picture on the other side's bookshelf without a beard before, it was hugging with a pregnant woman write. The first time this photo appeared, it seemed that there was no one around. (It was confirmed again that it was the same person)

24. The pregnant woman came back, Adam and her were lying on the bed, the woman leaned into his arms and asked how was school, he said "what?", the woman said nothing. (On the surface, the woman seemed to see that it was Adam this time, or met him as Adam. But in fact, what the woman said was the truth, and the identity of the professor was real)

25. Over there, Anthony and Adam's girlfriend are having sex, His girlfriend suddenly found out that he had a ring on his hand and yelled at him, Anthony acted very incomprehensible, like you were arguing about something. As soon as the camera turns, Anthony is driving with his girlfriend in the middle of the night, not knowing where to go. (I guess to Anthony's house)

26. Shot mix: The pregnant woman wakes up in the middle of the night to find Adam sitting on the living room sofa crying. Anthony and his girlfriend quarreled in the car, Anthony was very angry, and his girlfriend said to stop the car, it overturned. Adam starts sex with a pregnant woman.

27. Another city vision. In the morning, Adam turned on the radio and just missed the crash news. The pregnant woman was taking a shower. When Adam put on his coat, he found the personal confidential in the pocket of the coat. He opened it and found the key inside. He asked the pregnant woman if she had any arrangements, because he might have to go out. The pregnant woman ignored him, and he walked into the room and saw a giant spider in the room. (This scene is very shocking, the metaphor appears for the last time)

28. Then it's gone [.

My basic theory is that Adam is the main character, Anthony is the sub-personality, and his wife is the main character, but the main character (the real university professor) uses the sub-personality (imagined actor identity) to deal with his wife, himself (the main character) But go to extramarital affairs to have girlfriends and live together. There was a time when the sub-personality had the upper hand, and even said did u fuck MY wife to the main character, thinking that his wife belonged to his personality. Then the sub-personality was dissatisfied with the main character and went after his girlfriend. The main character decides to listen to the sub-personality and go back to see his wife with his true self, and leave his girlfriend to the sub-personality to deal with, which actually means giving up his girlfriend. Then the sub-person had a car accident and was wiped out, but his girlfriend was really dead. That is to say, this person killed his extramarital partner because of emotional instability (mistakenly) anyway, and it was the side of him who was responsible to his wife and felt that the extramarital affair was immoral. This is why the protagonist crying while sitting on the sofa actually represents a return of the protagonist.

But this can't explain the part where the wife went to Adam. If Adam is the main character, why does his wife need to search to find out where he works? Maybe the director was fooling us, because Adam was also searching and the shot was still editing, so the shot of the web page couldn't prove anything.

Thinking about it again, the wife was extremely shocked to see Adam at the place where he worked, maybe because this man who was obviously her husband didn't seem to know him, and asked why he was pregnant for a few months. So when I went home, my wife was very depressed and couldn't think about it when facing the sub-personality. (I found that my husband had a split personality, which I couldn't understand.) Then I

suddenly thought that the status of an actor is not only because the main character's dream is to be an actor, but also because of the meaning of "acting" and disguise.

I don't understand spiders and the last key at all, but I feel like I can justify it by seeing a review on imdb.

It is said that spiders represent an affair (affair), such as the first time in a strip club. (But what's the point of spiders appearing for the second time in this case? Is it hinting at the white-hot stage, so the sub-personality's sense of justice is bursting?) The big spider in the final room of the third time is related to the key in the letter, that key According to reviewers, it was the key to the strip club. That's why he immediately asked his wife if there was nothing wrong with him, because he wanted to engage in affair again (in fact, it can be understood that the sub-personality of justice was gone, and he couldn't restrain himself). So again this symbol of extramarital affairs appears hugely and the wife disappears.

My main point is that if there is something to symbolize an affair, why should it be a spider? Can't see the connection, maybe an allusion to American culture itself? I don't think so.

This review also pointed out a detail. At the beginning of the film, Adam was in the car, and he didn't answer his mother's call. Later, when he checked Anthony's information on the Internet, he didn't answer his mother's call. When I went to see my mother, my mother said that I was just a son like you, and I forgot about you. Tell me the thing (this thing refers to the fact that he met a person who looks exactly like him), and finally the wife told him in the bathroom that your mother seems to be looking for you. It seems to follow the beginning. It is even more certified that the real world is the mother+Adam+wife+girlfriend who appeared.

In conclusion, I think the film has a strong ego style, whether it's the camera or the music. Even the yellowish tones, the treatment of the shadows.

As for whether it looks good or not, I really don't take my eyes off it, because I have to devote myself to thinking about what the analysis is going on. But if you can't devote yourself to it, you will definitely feel bored, especially the first half is super slow, and the characters are often featured with big faces, but there is no expression. For example, someone fell asleep in the screening room in the middle of the film, snoring so loudly, because there were very quiet moments in this film, and everyone laughed.

And even if I invested in the analysis at the time, I felt at a loss because I couldn't see all the details from the whole. When I was typing the above things, I gradually became clear about the theoretical details of the primary and secondary personality. After reading it, I only had a very vague idea. So if you just finished watching it, then there must be a feeling that "the director can't explain anything at all".

Looking at the data, I found that the main actors refused to talk about the meaning of spiders when they talked with the director. I really hope there will be an explanation after the actual release.

Finally, I added that I don’t even know the skin of psychology, so the nouns of the main personality and sub-personality are basically made up in order to express that meaning.

  • Anthony: How many months are you?

    Helen: Six months.

Anthony: That's nice. I should be going. I have a class I have to teach.

[He laughs while she looks freaked]

Anthony: You never know how your day is gonna turn out. Have a nice day.

  • Anthony: Control, it's all about control. Every dictatorship has one obsession and that's it. In ancient Rome they gave the people bread and circuses. They kept population busy with entertainment but other dictatorships used other strategies to control ideas, the knowledge... how do they do that? Lower education, they limit culture, censor information, they censor any means of individual expression and is important to remember this, that this is a pattern, that repeats itself through out history.
