The film’s lens language is very restrained, and the grim lens expression coupled with boring music creates an atmosphere of faint panic. Unlike ordinary horror films, this film basically has no place to frighten the audience. In the process of watching the movie, you can let go of your heart of mentioning it, and calmly treat it as an ordinary literary drama. A family separated from society, the lonely land surrounded by mountains and forests, the looming witch, the mysterious livestock, quiet and treacherous, even if it is dull, it is difficult not to be brought into the atmosphere created by the film. The theme of the movie is actually the core of the original sin of Christianity. The heroine’s father represents deceit and arrogance, her mother represents hypocrisy and anger, her brother is lust, and the twins are duplicity, but only The only female lord is precisely a symbol of true purity. Under the guidance of Satan, who is a symbol of the black goat, the pure female lord, who is as pure as an angel, is finally called a witch and killed by the whole family, thus taking refuge in Satan.
The black goats and rabbits used in the film are inseparable from religion. The rabbit that my father was eager to hunt represents fertility and vitality in Western religions. In other masterpieces, rabbits are often used as a symbol of bait. The black goat gave people a weird feeling from the moment it appeared, until the final reveal of the original shape, dragging the heroine into the altar of the devil.
The first half of the film is very slow and boring, but after entering the second half, unconscious terror spreads. The opposition between illusion and reality becomes the main cause of fright. Especially for believers, this kind of horror penetrates the deepest part of the soul. I am afraid that this is the main reason why the film is so popular in the West. As for the accent that some people say is difficult to understand, in fact, it is mainly because the characters in the film are all archaic, just like what we are, but it has nothing to do with the accent.
Horror films on religious subjects seem to have never disappeared. When this film was released, it really opened up a path for the exploration and development of horror films.
