Life needs a miracle, and there is hope in life

The original name of "Tsunami Miracle" was Spanish "Lo imposible", meaning "impossible", just as its accurate English translation "The Impossible", the domestic translation into "Tsunami Miracle" basically spoiled more than half of it.

This is a somewhat clichéd disaster story. I can't think of any theater disaster movie that is not Hollywood-style Happy Endding. But it was said at the beginning of the film: "This is a true story", well, it's time to witness the miracle. So we followed a family of 5 people-Mom, Dad, and three sons, encountered the tsunami, scattered, and reunited. I thought it would be nothing more than a few big catastrophe scenes of burning money plus a sensational plot that could barely make me squeeze out a few tears, but the director made this simple story not so simple.

The most impressive part of the film is that the director used many "contrast" methods and many details and clues to achieve the purpose of emphasis. The biggest contrast is the Christmas before the tsunami and the disaster after 5 seconds. Just like before the tsunami, the silhouette of a backlit breast of the "mother" in the movie changing into a swimsuit. Through the sun, the picture looks quiet and beautiful. This atmosphere contrasts with the "mother"'s bloody breasts after the disaster. Even though there are not many catastrophe scenes in the whole film, it is the details of the bloody and scarred body of the "mother", which makes people feel more miserable and more real. There are also several contrasts, such as the joy of Daniel, a child of hope, when he was found by his father, and the sorrow of Lucas, who thought that his father and two younger brothers were both dead by his dying mother. The contrast between the "mother" with his son Lucas by her side and the silent female patient lying on her back with no expression on her back, and so on. There are many details: the note at the end of the film says "We are on the beach", the label of "orphan" on Lucas's body, the doctor on her mother's arm when she was awake and the doctor wrote her own name with a marker, maybe it represents The red ball with the sixth sense or "the miracle of love"...

It is precisely because of these contrasts and details that "impossibility" is even more impossible, more convincing, and the whole story becomes fuller. Through this family, we understand that life needs miracles, and that there is hope in life. Yes, the last family finally got out of danger and got on the plane after the reunion. The audience just got over and was about to be happy for them, but the tears of "mother" were silently streaming down. The director let us see the entire beach after the disaster through her eyes. The miserable situation. At this time, we also had a contrast in our hearts with the "mother"-this kind of contrast between life and death is too heavy! This disaster, this family is fortunate, through this film we should remember not the "impossible family", but to remember those who died. Those of us who are alive, should cherish this miracle of our lives and move forward with kind thoughts. If we can see the light, there is hope!

PS: Regarding actors, Tom Holland, the little actor who plays Lucas, is of course good acting, as if he is the rhythm of the future star. Of course Ivan McGregor is handsome, and Naomi Watts, the mother's actor, is of course the real protagonist. He deserves to be nominated... But I didn’t want to say more about it, so I ran and cried at the three boys. In this scene, the director's vision for casting is worthy of praise!

There are tears in the whole film, but the filming is too simple and superficial, lacks thematic connotation, and the director cannot see the huge trauma caused by the disaster. The whole film is supported by Ivan and Naomi + three cute babies.

Gotta give Naomi's performance a star

The Impossible quotes

  • Henry Bennett: [to his young son] But you know, you know, the most scary bit for me?

Thomas Bennett: When the water hit?

Henry Bennett: No. After that, when I came up, I was on my own. That was the scariest part. And when I saw the two of you clinging to the tree, I didn't feel so scared anymore. I knew I wasn't on my own. You see?
