Well, I think this film are suitable for both Children and adults audience alright.
As adult audience we might see some elements that we feel improper for children to watch. As we discussed in class, the abnormal behaviors, weird uncanny objects and the dark mood this film brought might give the children bad influences. Elements like Low key lighting, skeleton animals, creepy rooms, meat and insects, body parts, laboratory specimen and potions. But according to my memory, I did not see films and animations that we think improper for children to watch the way adults see them. Same idea a scene terrifies an adult may look interesting to a child. Most of us had that feeling when we feel uncanny about the props or creatures in the film, the children would not. Things a child find interesting or funny could be boring to us.All the perceptions towards weird things happened among in this film are the results of education and social maturity, which a child may not cumulate enough information to interpret the undertone this film brought to the adult audience. Most of them do not have enough experience or knowledge to know why this laboratory specimen rabbit is “creepy”. And this film's dialogue are quite clean and innocent, which we do not need to worry about bring bad languages to children.
On the other hand, things like girl coming out from the doll, how the specimen rabbit broke its belly and sawdust coming out, the repeating action in the tea room, and the insert of a girl's mouth narrating the story in the film would probably disturb an adult audience, or make them loose their patient.
Actually a lot classical children's novel and fairytales are quite bloody and nasty. Stories of Brothers Grimm always involve weird animal, potion and body parts. One of the most important influence about how children's novel or film should be proper is Disney. They basically removed everything they think would hurt a children's feeling from all the classical stories.
For Children audience, they would enjoy stop motion animation technique, like Wallace and Gromit or Chicken Run, at least I enjoy that when I was young. They would And the props in the film, the children would not find them disturbing as adult audience do , it is common behavior that a kid put kitchenware in their mouth, or drink ink and eating cookies. Actually, I think children would find this film entertaining. This is a child's adventure story, quiet interesting plot from Alice in Wonderland; it has dolls , “animals” and weird creatures in it; and they have all kinds of “magic” stuff like potions makes people grow or shrink; crouching through a drawer to another world, and the joy of putting butter on a watch. And loneliness, a common theme among children that they may find in this film. So I think this movie should be fine to the children.
