A middle-aged man, Lawrence, a teacher of Victorian literature, was kind-hearted, but he came across as acerbic and domineering. After his wife died, he raised his two children alone. Because of his bad temper, his son became more and more estranged from him, and his daughter was sullen all day. Lawrence was heartbroken, but there was nothing he could do. Until he fell in love with his former student, Janet, and was finally forced to start changing himself, removing all pretense in order to get his beloved.
