"Dupin": a happy wandering

It's not Master Hou or Section Chief Jia, Palme d'Or gave "Dippan", which is not the most popular. There are as many as five French films participating in this year's competition, and "Dupin" is barely a general among the scumbags. Compared with director Jacques Audiard's own works, "Dupin" can hardly be said to be his best film; but timing is everything. In a somewhat mediocre session of Cannes, "Dupin", which has the advantage of time and place, seems to be the safest choice that can be accepted by all parties.

"Nie Yinniang" is a little too old-fashioned, "Son of Sol" is too lush, "Lobster" is too clever, and "Carol" is too neat-compared with several other hits in Cannes this year, the story of "Dupin" is popular Xiaochang is easy to accept (there are so many Americans on the jury...), and at the same time captures many scoring topics such as immigrant integration, war trauma, and struggles at the bottom. Interestingly, French films have left the Palme d'Or three times in the past decade, from "Between the Walls" to "The Life of Adair" to "Dupin", all of which are stories of immigrant backgrounds without exception. This is obviously a reflection of French current affairs, and it has also become a shortcut for French films to obtain topic depth.

The title of the movie "Deepan" comes from the name of the protagonist of the film. Dipan is a member of the Tamil Tigers rebels in Sri Lanka. After losing his wife and children in the war, he smuggled to France under the identity of others and came to France with him. Yes, there are also temporary wife Yarini and temporary daughter Ilaya who are together because of borrowed identity. In the outskirts of Paris, Dupin worked as a gatekeeper to receive and clean the letters. After fleeing the war, he hoped that this temporary family could be run, but it backfired, and the Dupin family was inevitably involved in gang fights. The film unhurriedly started the story from Dipan's humiliation, but it ushered in a climax with the commercial sense of "violence with violence" at the end.

Dipin, who was a war hero, tried to integrate into a new life and forget his past when he lost his wife and children. The details of the characters in the film are vividly portrayed. When acquiring immigration status, Dipin made up the reason that "the government who used to be a journalist seeks political asylum". The translator did not translate it into French, but said directly to him: "This reason has been used badly, change it to another". Because the salary on Weibo is not enough to support the whole family, Dipan is persuading Yarini to find a job. At the same time, he is also a part-time street hawker, and he doesn't mind wearing fluorescent cat ear ornaments on his head. These textured details , from the personal experience of director Jacques Audiard, "No one in life will pay attention to the stories behind these people, and I am very interested to explore."

Although the film is named after Dipan, the film is almost unfolded from the perspective of Dipan and his wife. Compared with Dipan's forbearance before the whole film broke out, "wife" Yarini's emotions are much richer, and she was dismissed As a community nanny, I didn't expect to serve the father of the gang leader. The interaction between her and the gang leader is the interesting point to promote the progress of the film. The identities and backgrounds of the two are very different, but they are implicated in each other because of a subtle and common sense of "independence". In the past life and culture of Yarini, it was difficult to appreciate the respect and affirmation from the male world. These are actually in this danger. molecules are satisfied. At the same time, she and Dipan developed a certain feeling of mutual love and killing from a temporary couple.

The whole film is full of emotions and rich in details. It presents a panoramic view of the suburban communities of Paris in the daily life of immigrants. The story progresses slowly but is full of tension, and maintains a certain sense of oppression of "danger is about to happen" throughout the whole process. Jacques Audiard's films are inseparable from the two themes of "violence" and "love": when telling about love, it is always accompanied by rudeness that does not know how to express it, and when showing violence, it is full of warmth. In Dipan’s disturbed dreamland, close-ups of the elephants in his hometown repeatedly appeared. The eyes of the elephants with transparent sunlight and leaves were soft and comfortable, which corresponded to the theme of the film “Wandering and Running”. In the last violent scene of the Jedi counterattack, Dipan was in a Lifting his gun upstairs in the smoke, Jacques Audiard captured this dangerous revenge poetically with a low-angle close-up.

The script is solid, the performance is delicate, the images are cold, and the music with South Asian style is also refreshing. Jacques Audiard has made a steady play in a clever theme: In fact, this is not the first time he has paid attention to the topic of immigration: "My Heart" The heroine of Forgotten Rhythm is Asian (the background is Chinese, but she speaks Vietnamese...), "The Prophet" is a prison situation of North African descent, and in "Dupin", Jacques Audiard's perspective turns to Thailand Mill people.

Unlike Abudai Keshish, who also focused on immigration themes and filmed "The Life of Adair", Jacques Odia's family has no distinct immigration background, which makes his works maintain a certain objective calm, stable and not promiscuous. But it may also be because of such a background that each of his works ends with a happy ending. "My Heart" doubles and flies, "The Prophet" is released from prison, and the story of "Dippan" also ends in a little dream. The family and people are in harmony. As a Palme d'Or work, it's really a bit warm and outrageous.

But, even if he is rude, this is the best film of the 68th Cannes Film Festival this year. After the popular "The Prophet" won the Grand Jury Award, and the well-received "Rust and Bone" came home empty-handed, the less-than-surprising "Dippin" came to the top, and this Palme d'Or is awarded to Jacques Oudi A half "Lifetime Achievement Award".
