obedience experiment

Before Miguel's experiment, obedience experiments had been done by several people.
1. In 1924, the Welsh landis experiment: insisted that the subjects brutally cut off the heads of live mice, and the subjects were not doctors or medical students. As a result, 71% of the subjects were forced to do so.
2. In 1944, the frank experiment, frank found that as long as he put on a white coat, he could make the subjects do all kinds of absurd actions.
However, Miguel did not study psychology, so he did not draw on the above experiments.
There are many peculiar situations in Miguel's experiment, which are not mentioned in the movie at all:
1. Realism. The experimental scene is very realistic. First of all, the subjects were asked by the experimenter to tie up the actor who played the "student", not the experimenter, which meant that the subjects played the role of the "executioner" from the beginning. In order to make the subjects feel the pain of the "victim", the experimenter will first use the machine to shock the subjects, so that the subjects think that the machine is really electric.
2. Machines. Fake electric shocks are not like household appliances, but very conspicuous and dangerous. It can be seen that it is an electric shock device, and there is a camouflaged skull symbol on the dangerous scale, which clearly points out that more than 300v is fatal to people. "Very dangerous!"
3. Laughs. Many subjects laughed or couldn't help laughing, and one subject was unable to move, and the experiment was stopped.

Afterwards, 65% of the "heroes"

chose to consciously or unconsciously obey the decision to hurt others, but 35% of them chose not to hurt. Are these people the legendary heroes? Specific names will not be lifted until 2057. In the mid-1960s, Miguel took the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Test on the two people, asking them questions about childhood, parent-child relationship, early memory, etc. The results did not have any commonality. As the movie says, anyone can become a Nazi and kill Jews, which is why this experiment is so controversial—the widespread American belief that liberal democracy is the nature of the American people is wrong. Once there is a similar system, anyone will do the same.

The filming of this film is too crude, many things that should be said are not said, and everyone is as simple as the people in the "History Channel" documentary. Miguel himself is not actually a psychologist, which is also his greatest characteristic. He likes a glamorous and rich life. He is not a pedant who shrinks in an ivory tower, which is why he can develop so many important experiments. , of course, is why his experiments were controversial.

Many of the experiments mentioned in the film have already become famous, and there are no surprises to repeat them. The moral controversies of the experiments are only self-defense, but no self-examination. The private affairs of husband and wife are not too interesting, and a film that explores human nature has no insight into human nature. Peter Sarsgaard's performance was unconvincing. The withdrawal technique is not as economical as House of Cards. The film was neither documentary enough nor stylized enough. Both ends could not reach the shore and were drowned in the middle of the water.

Quite an interesting topic. The discussion of human nature is a classic case. For example, when you look up at the sky, there must be knowledge among the 6 people, and mistakes are made in conformity with the crowd. It's a bit lengthy, but it's really thought provoking.

  • Stanley Milgram: I believe we are puppets with perception, with awareness. Sometimes we can see the strings. And perhaps our awareness is the first step in our liberation.

  • Stanley Milgram: Human nature can be studied but not escaped, especially your own.
