A feast for those who love movies

The history before watching the movie.

When Nolan's film "Dunkirk" focused on ordinary people, this "victory escape" was just one of the many problems that Churchill faced after he became prime minister.

What Churchill took over was definitely a mess that was never seen in a century.

On the eve of World War II, Churchill raised controversial political views and made many enemies in the country. He ended his ups and downs in parliamentary career, but he was in danger when the country was under enemy.

In the summer of 1939, Churchill wrote in a newspaper commentary: "Germany represents an unprecedented'cult organization'." The people seemed to like to hear such remarks.

The German invasion of Poland just confirmed Churchill's prediction. For some reason, the Nazis heard Churchill's "accusations" uncharacteristically and directly pointed out that Churchill was a "dirty liar" and a "bloated pig."

You know that the accent of the Germans is very powerful, but it enhances Churchill's reputation.

In this way, Churchill, who was "named a liar" by the Nazis, sat in a limousine all the way to Buckingham Palace. On May 10, 1940, King George VI would ask him to form a new government.

In his memoirs, Churchill wrote about the mood at the time: "I feel as if I am advancing in the footsteps of fate. I have been preparing for this moment in my past life."

Really.

Objectively speaking, Churchill, who was supposed to retire in his political career at the age of 65, was pushed to the table by Hitler to "re-employ". The two of them who opened up the history of the past had already been formed on the battlefield of World War I.

At that time, the two people were not of high class and had fought each other, but they both suffered dumb losses when they went home after the war. They spent a lot of time adjusting their clamoring lines until World War II gave them both a stage to officially clamor.

Therefore, Europe during World War II can also be said to be a duel between these two eloquents.

The confrontation between Hitler and Churchill is a confrontation between totalitarianism and human liberalism; a confrontation between a madman and an ordinary old man; a confrontation between an asceticist and a hedonist; a murderer and an adventurer The confrontation; is a confrontation between a racist and an imperial political realist.

The strange thing is that few people like them both, but they all like to listen to them. Churchill's most powerful weapon is language, and so is Hitler.

Churchill gave many gorgeous speeches, the most famous one on June 4, 1940:

"We will fight on the beach, on the land, on the battlefield, on the street, and on the hillside. We will never give in."

These speeches link unstoppable rhythms and repeated sentences together, reminiscent of Shakespeare's royal aura, which will ignite in the movie trailer, not to mention the British people who were at war at any time.

However, Hitler directly refuted this kind of mental food for feeling good with his actions. In the summer of 1940, Germany had invaded Poland, occupied Norway, defeated and humiliated France, and defeated the British Isles in a complete defeat, with almost no resistance.

At that time, Hitler was still in alliance with the Soviet Union. It seemed that it was only a matter of time before he ruled Europe. At this time, Germany was just about to sound the horn of victory. Stalin was waiting to harvest the leeks, while the United States was still on the sidelines.

Only Britain is still fighting against the dictator. Churchill declared that he has only one goal: "Victory, victory at all costs, no matter how long and difficult the road will be."

Hitler denounced Churchill as a "lunatic", "paralyzed" and "world arsonist".

Churchill also fought back by calling Hitler an "evil man", the "evil product of all past mistakes and shame", and said, "Europe will not succumb to Hitler's hatred."

It seems to be scolding, from personal attacks to personality humiliation, and it does everything, but it is actually for the world to listen to. It's like beating the young and Dangerous boy in Yau Ma Tei, Hong Kong, and I have to say that the other party shamelessly robbed my horse and let the crowds onlookers stand in line.

Scolding is scolding, and beating still requires beating, so beating while scolding.

The German invasion is about to blow up London Bridge. Churchill's only wise action is to surrender to Hitler or reach a peace agreement.

But the older generation of British people, those who experienced World War II, never felt that Britain should surrender.

What makes them have the belief that they must win? Their answer is very simple: Churchill's speech. Churchill's words convinced everyone in this country that victory will ultimately belong to us.

Really.

In August 1940, Britain reached a critical point of life and death. The German army carried out a devastating attack on the southern British airport. The British Air Force resisted stubbornly and the suffering continued.

Churchill gave another important speech on August 20. He praised the pilots of the Royal Air Force, which was once again shocking:

"In the history of human warfare, there has never been a time like this, with so few people, making such huge sacrifices for so many people."

A few words express people’s unspeakable emotions. It looks like a miserable loss, but what Churchill said made the British people determined to live and die together and live out glory and greatness in their hearts.

Although in World War II, the Soviet Red Army and American soldiers won the victory, in fact, Churchill still had a decisive influence.

Be strong, never give up!

It is not only bullets and bombs that win the war, but faith.

This belief is what Churchill’s breathtaking speeches instill in every Englishman, proving that the power of language is sometimes more powerful than weapons, at least slowing down the enemy’s progress, and living a splendid life.

Success is not final, failure is not fatal,

it is the courage to continue that counts.

Courage to overcome everything.

To be able to shoot this period of history so superbly, and the performance is so subtle, this movie and the actors are definitely going to win awards.

Hitler actually really wanted to negotiate peace with Britain back then, because he felt that the biggest beneficiary of Britain's defeat was not Germany. But Churchill could not have known, and indeed had no reason to believe so. Not to mention the possible changes in position after Hitler had completely digested the European continent, and more importantly, if Britain did not insist on resistance, the United States would have no room to intervene. Without US aid, the Soviet Union may not be able to survive. The world today may be very different.

Darkest Hour quotes

  • Winston Churchill: My father was like God. Busy elsewhere.

  • Viscount Halifax: The deadly danger here is this romantic fantasy of fighting to the end. What is "the end" if not the destruction of all things? There's nothing heroic in going down fighting if it can be avoided. Nothing even remotely patriotic in death or glory if the odds are firmly on the former. Nothing inglorious in trying to shorten a war we are clearly losing.
