Chen Kaige: People of the Qin State——A Record of Zhang Yimou

I first met Yimou at the film school. Because they live in a building, they meet each other every day, and they also know their names. I only heard that in the entrance examination, his application works made the teachers quarrel. He was much older than the average candidate, so the college did not accept it. Later, when the Minister of Culture spoke in person, he barely went to school.
In fact, if there is no such thing, even if he has excellent grades in all subjects, and no one quarrels for him, he is also in the right age, and I am afraid that he will not be able to enter school. This is a blessing in disguise. For what? I'll talk about it later.
Yimou's appearance is not astonishing, of medium build, and he is heavy on the way, coupled with the usual clothes and hats, he can't be seen in the crowd. It couldn't be easier to paint his portrait: a nose with an arc slightly curved downwards, two straight from the wing of the nose to the corner of the mouth, plus a pair of deep eyes.
This feature became more clearly seen in the intense study and work in the following years, and later, even the bottom of the cheekbones also collapsed.
He didn’t move much in school. We were opponents on the court at most. The students had to organize a dance party by themselves, and he would never be found. As for the vice chairman of the student union for one year later, it is said that it was because of his age. Can be used for the sake of the brothers of the classmates. I only heard that he was good in every subject in the class, and his classmates respected him. Later, I saw a group of four works by him in a photography exhibition, and I thought that this person was not just waiting for a moment.
One of them has a deep impression. The painting is more than one meter long. It is a young man on a cliff of a hundred feet. He is solemnly independent, but does not have the meaning of being strong. The imagination and production are good, and the realm is also deep. Because he is of the same generation, he has a heart of comprehension, and sighs for a long time.
Later, I heard that his photographic works were published in newspapers. In addition to the praise, there are still praises. The most curious one is a young woman who has been waiting for a job for a long time. In the "China Youth Daily", I actually passed the flight attendant, and then I came to thank Yunyun. I think it's a bit of a romance.
During the study, because of a good impression, I had talked with him about future cooperation, but he hadn't finished his studies, it was just empty talk.
When he finished shooting his graduation work, he participated in the "Red Elephant" group directed by Tian Zhuangzhuang. I was in Yunnan at the time, but I did not meet. Later, when I met in Beijing Film, I came to send samples. But think that I dare not be satisfied. He felt that he was very ambitious during the conversation.
After graduating in 1982, he was surprised to learn that he had been assigned to the Guangxi factory. Because he is from Xi'an and married again, why did he go to Guangxi? Later I heard that this had a lot to do with the turmoil when he enrolled in school.
A year later, he filmed "One and Eight" together with Jun Zhao, Xiao Feng, and He Qun, which made people stupid. It was only in the subsequent cooperation that I had the opportunity to gradually get to know Zhang Yimou a little bit. One of the results of this understanding was that I, together with him, He Qun, and all the crew members of the filming crew filmed "Yellow Earth", and let We have some feelings between us.
Zhang Yimou was a little older than me. He was born in Xi'an in 1951 and is known as the ancient capital. Before the Yimou people were very few words, not to mention family affairs, and then I knew one or two things after getting acquainted with them.
His father was a military man. Before the liberation, the second uncle wanted to lead his troops to this side. He was found by the KMT agents and killed. But for a long time in the future, the dead man carried a lurking name; the uncle also had problems with his whereabouts. Yimou and his brothers bear the guilt of "Taiwan relations" on their backs. A piece of paper full of false claims has been used in his archives like cancer for more than 20 years. And because he himself didn't know it, he naturally couldn't get an explanation when he was wronged. His father also became a "historical counter-revolutionary" because he was a military academy graduate. For a long time after the liberation of such a family, the situation is conceivable.
After the start of the "Cultural Revolution", Yimou's father went to work in southern Shaanxi, and his mother as a doctor took the "6. During this period, the younger brother became deaf due to illness and finally became deaf.
Counting from 1968 onwards, Zhang Yimou joined the team for three years. During the three years, it was nothing more than planting crops in spring and harvesting in autumn, harvesting in summer and storing in winter, and repairing water conservancy in free time. Dozens of people lived in a kiln and worked for a hundred days. In this kind of farming activities that have been passed down for thousands of years, he met farmers who worked to live, and he also tasted poverty. Once, he told me about the Mai Ke who cut wheat in summer, and he used a rolling pin on his stomach when he ate a few catties of noodles in one meal. After venting, I will eat a few kilograms in the next meal.
After listening to it, I think the story has a deep truth.
In three years, he had very few opportunities to go to southern Shaanxi, while herding sheep, while understanding his family background in his father's words, when the sheep were not hungry, he would go back and forth 80 miles to buy his own rations. When we talk about this kind of subject, we only treat it as a joke. This is our benefit-fortunately, we don't take it seriously, alive, that's it.
Three years later, Yimou entered the Xianyang Cotton Textile Factory. Entering the factory is also a lot of trouble, the reason is that it still can't get out of the family. The "Revolutionary Committee" discussed and discussed several times. In the end, it was because he could play basketball twice that he only ate the "official food" twice.
In the factory, he carried a hundred and ten catties of raw materials into the workshop, and let the girls spin yarn and weave. Open, so and so, seven spring and autumn.
He also met the workers who worked in front of the loom one day, and he also tasted the hardship.
I heard that Yimou started amateur photography while working as a porter. Everyone knows that this is a costly affair. He has to eat and he has a family. The family has his father who is not paid, a grandmother who is over eighty years old, and two brothers.
But he prefers to have a camera.
Later, he sold blood and exchanged his own blood for a camera without breaking any law. The camera has a cover made by his unmarried daughter-in-law. The outside is labor cloth and the inside is wrapped in cotton. Since then, he has become a student and professional photographer in the Department of Photography, and he has never used a camera better than his own "Seagull". He thinks "Seagull" is good, "Seagull" can take very decent photos. The quality of the camera is not the most important thing.
Looking west, there are piles of embroidery in Chang'an. Zhang Yimou came out of there. Not because of the name, but because he made a real idea, for Yimou, not for Daoliang. For this, he took the camera exchanged for blood to the Qin land of Wuhua Tianbao. Zhang Yimou, who had been to Huayue ten times, looked far and wide, thinking of more worrying about Wanjia, including himself.
I have talked a lot about the creation of Yimou with the critics, so I won't go into details. I can say a few things about his work attitude. I think his achievements are related to this. All members of the group nicknamed Yimou as "Master Zhang", and another nickname was "Zhang Heimian". I heard someone say "Yimou has a black face again", which means "there is a problem with the shooting".
Once, to choose a hillside scenic spot, the requirement is that there is a zero pear tree on the slope, and a white path under the tree, winding upward. The scene is endless: it's not that the tree is not suitable, it's not that the road is not suitable. Yimou naturally turned black again. The final decision: step on a path. So all the crew of the film crew started at 2 o'clock in the afternoon and filed up with Chaplin's pace, leaving only Yimou to direct and observe at the camera position on the opposite mountain beam. It was successful after four hours. The road is white and smooth, with no traces of footsteps left, and it looks very much like a road that has been stepped on for many years. At this time, his face gradually turned pale.
Another time, the day scene was shot in the kiln. In order to make the light effect real, Yimou must adjust the internal and external light ratio. After taking a shot, he stood there silently, and then said for a while, that the outside is too hairy, if only there is a gray building outside the kiln.
Everyone laughed: Except for the soil slopes, there are mountain ridges. The cave itself was built by He Qun, and how come the gray building! He didn't laugh, but was in a daze, the black coarse cloth quilted jacket hanging from the placket of his body, like a big mouth cloth.
I said to him: "The next camera will not move, so..."
He said, "It would be nice if there is a gray building outside." The
lighting team leader said to him, "Why, master, the lights won't move. ! " "
Block out there like a gray floor. "
Actor Yankouerxiao:". the line, the magic disease "
ten days after the samples come, after reading, I asked how he feels.
"It's okay!" he said.
When he finished speaking, I chanted Buddha in my heart.
Yimou's clothes are simple. Except for the single underwear, he wears a pair of rubber shoes and no socks for two months after filming. Take off your shoes, you don't have to be suffocating. As a last resort, the shoes were put in the bathroom every night, and they were still smelly when they were taken out the next morning.
This pair of shoes caused another story: On June 20, 1984, we completed the last batch of shots in Jiaxian County, northern Shaanxi, and were eager to return to Beijing for processing to decide whether the film crew should withdraw. An appointment was made in advance, and there was a car waiting for us in Suide. Then, we took the car through Wubao and crossed the Yellow River Bridge, entered Shanxi and went straight to Jiexiu, and took the train to Beijing at night.
We set off at 7 o'clock in the morning. Due to the rainy road, we had to go around a long way to Suide. By then, we had traveled 80 kilometers and the time was 4 o'clock in the afternoon. I quickly changed cars and crossed the river. In addition to the driver, there were actors Xue Bai, Yimou, the production director, and me.
After entering the ground in Shanxi, the sky was already dark. Only then did I find that roads were being built throughout Shanxi. The red "Fiat" was walking like a boat in the mud, stopping and stopping, and had to get out of the car from time to time to advance. At about 12 midnight, heavy rain fell, and traffic jams 24 kilometers away from Jiexiu, making traffic hopeless. We went down and tried to turn around and decided to take Taiyuan straight.
After turning around, I was covered in mud and water. The car walked to a railway crossing, and the road was as flat as a mirror. I thought that the world was peaceful from now on, and I arrived in Taiyuan before early morning.
Yimou sang to make a stop, and the others were surprised. I saw him get out of the car, took off those rubber shoes, and placed them in the middle of the highway respectfully, saying: "It's not easy for you to be with me. Now that the filming is over, I leave you here."
After saying that he got into the car, he shouted "Go". After everyone laughed, he told me, "One and Eight" was filmed, and he had done the same. This is the second time.
I was amused. When the car entered Wenshui, I found that the county was also building roads. The road was worse than the front, and there were stones all over. When I got out of the car and pushed forward, I could only hear a groan, and then I heard: "World War II , The Second World War, the Germans attacked Moscow." The
four fields were pitch black, and three small figures were struggling to push the carts, all of them were yellow mud below the waist. I suddenly thought: "I want to express the lofty sky, the depth of the earth, and the east of the Yellow River flows to the sea without returning..." Then he laughed.
I guess like this: Yimou must have missed the smelly rubber shoes very much.
At 5:20 in the morning, the mud truck drove to Taiyuan Railway Station quickly. The people who came down, led by the "Barefoot Great Immortal", surprised the citizens of Taiyuan who got up in the morning.
Forty minutes later, the car went to Beijing.
Zhang Yimou went to the film processing factory barefoot in the afternoon.
I often tell Zhang Yimou not to jokingly say that he looks like a Qin terracotta warrior. If we shoot an absurd movie that runs through the past and the present, we will slowly push it from a long-term view of a figurine on the ancient road of Xianyang to a mid-to-near view, and then superimpose it into an art. Mou's face, then, would be very similar to him, perhaps because Yimou is a descendant of the real Qin people.
