This chic French noir's portrayal of characters on the fringes is worth scrutinizing

The mediocre life wraps our soul. In the endless void of every day, we live monotonously and numbly, as if we are always expecting something to relieve our unbearable situation. We need a little stimulation, or spicy stuff to fill our spiritual void.

Maybe, you need to go to the bar for a beer, maybe, you need to meet someone to fall in love, maybe, all you need is a noir movie.

Today I recommend a noir film "The Prophet" directed by French director Jacques Audiard .

"The Prophet" is not a new film. He is not even a crime film with a heroic aura. It is a literary monologue with a French accent. It is an anti-type gangster film with some philosophical speculation and moral discussion.

The male protagonist, Marek, is a marginal person in society and was sentenced to 6 years in prison. He is of ordinary Arabian descent, and he is not seen by Corsicans, and the Arabs do not accept him. At the beginning of his imprisonment, he was bullied by various gangs.

With a misplaced identity, he can't accurately classify himself, but he can't control so much. Survival is the primary problem he must face in his life. So no matter what his life goals are, he has to go to his goddamn beliefs. Only by living can his life have meaning.

Therefore, when the Corsican black chief in the prison forcibly assigned him the task of assassination, he had no choice but to accept that he was the one who was killed first. With his strong learning ability and good use of his vague identity, Malik wandered among different groups of people and quickly found a way out. Eventually he became the head of the French mafia.

In fact, Malik is an ordinary person who looks very much like us. From an ignorant young man with nothing, he has continued to study and work hard, and has grown into a real mafia boss. The only difference from us is that his living environment has been replaced by prison. Just in.

How different are we from him Malik? Each of us seems to be living in a cage. We keep fighting. Maybe we can change the status quo, but can we change the direction of our destiny?

Compared with ordinary gangster films, "The Prophet" focuses more on personal growth and on the pressures and choices an ordinary person faces in life. Although 155 copies of the film is a little long, if you pay more attention to the characters than the plot, you will taste some flavors if you taste it carefully.

The open ending at the end, I like it better, even a little surprise. The director did not arbitrarily exaggerate or even give us the imagination of Malik's life after he became a boss. He just kept his heart at home in the warmth of the moment, but it made people feel the warmth and beauty!
