Genius master or lunatic scumbag? ——Watch "Modigliani" and "Puccini Biography" at the Shanghai Film Festival

This year's Shanghai Film Festival has passed, and this annual event has interrupted the usual quiet and tranquility of Xinhua Road. It was as if a stone had been thrown into the pond, but what appeared was a wave of cars and waves of people inside and outside the three floors. Watching the films of the film festival is like a lottery to me. I can watch any film I get, and I don’t pick or make trouble. A good old film is happy and proud, just when the character breaks out to win the lottery; a few astringent films will not be downcast, the big thing is to rest for two hours, and finally leave with a three-dimensional applause.

I was fortunate enough to see four films this June, and luckily, there were at least two that were refreshing. But thinking about it again, it's actually nothing, but it's just the chance of flipping a coin in half, just like the choices that ordinary people like me face every day. Not to mention the films that are not interesting and even the audience rests, but the two winning films are unexpectedly good-looking. One is the film of the same name about the genius painter Modigliani, and the other is the personal biographical film "Puccini Biography" of the music master Puccini.

Tolstoy famously said at the beginning of "Anna Karenina": "Happy lives are all alike, but unhappy lives are different". To the masters of genius, however, happiness and unhappiness look alike. Even happiness or unhappiness is hard to tell, at least at the end of the movie when they end their lives in pain, I feel a touch of fulfillment. Condensing the creation in the struggle, and calmly calling the curtain in the high light, this should have been the best home for the genius master.

The painter Modigliani was insane, admired by the master Renoir, tit for tat and sympathy with his peer painter Picasso. However, unlike Picasso's outstanding people, the shadow of a broken childhood family has always haunted Modigliani, tearing his cognition of himself and the world. In order to alleviate the pain, he spent all day with alcohol, which exacerbated the deterioration of the already weak body. Modigliani's irresistible talent for painting and his paranoid pursuit of art made him disdain for works other than those he deliberately created. The result of this is that he is accompanied by poverty all his life, and he is even unable to take care of his wife and children. Poverty, illness, and cynicism made Modigliani's short-lived thirty-six years unsatisfactory. But this seemingly tragic life is completely different because of the wife and queen model Jeanne. In order to be with Modi, Jeanne did not hesitate to turn against the wealthy family, and even let go of her motherly love and watched her father take away her own daughter. A pampered young lady changed out of her fancy clothes and was cramped in the artist's dilapidated studio and bedroom. Facing the filthy toilet, Qianqianyu can still make it look brand new by fiddling with the brush. Even her eyes on the toilet were more enthusiastic than when she turned to face her mother who persuaded her to turn back. It is this uncompromising love that has always accompanied the already numb painter.

But Mr. Painter doesn't seem to be changed by love. At first, the acquaintance with Jeanne can be said to be attracted by beauty, but the casual attitude can never make people believe the truth of his feelings. After separation, they met on the street again. Facing Jeanne's doubts in the morning, Modi indifferently asked her to see if the surrounding environment was suitable for the child's life. "Look at me. I have nothing for you. I have nothing. I'm nothing." Obviously, Modi is very aware of his current situation and doesn't want Na to bear it all. But the reality is that he left Jeanne a child, and their daughter left Jeanne alone.

The opera composer Puccini was completely different from the painter Modigliani. Although they are all masters of art from Italy, Puccini is obviously a famous artist who is popular with audiences. The successful performance of many operas established his status as a master early in the morning, and there was enough financial guarantee. What other hobbies does Master Puccini have besides creating operas? Of course a girl. During her studies at the Conservatory of Music, she was accompanied by singer and girlfriend Christina; she went home to visit relatives and fell in love with a married young woman Elvira at first sight, and gave birth to her daughter and eloped together; she ran into a young girl Doria on a vacation in the country, and burst out with brilliant creative inspiration but was unable to protect her. Watching Xiang Xiaoyu die; also, Manon's soprano, the female reporter interviewed... The most indispensable thing for Puccini is the cigarette in his hand and the female companion beside him. They are like the rich and colorful notes in the master's life, either high-spirited and tragic, or mournful tears, accompanied by the slow unfolding of the road of master Puccini, they have witnessed the birth and creation of those classic works that have attracted worldwide attention. Then, Christina went to America, Doria committed suicide, and even Elvira, the "love of life" in the master's mouth, stayed together. And sopranos and female reporters are just passing by.

No matter how splendid life is, it will come to an end, and no matter how splendid achievements will come to an end. Modigliani ultimately failed the test of alcohol, and Puccini also received a gift of cigarettes. It was alcohol and cigarettes that put an end to the continued greatness of the masters, even as they left "The Naked Woman" and "Turandot" which were enjoying worldwide popularity. The day after Modigliani left, Jeanne planted a heart medicine for Picasso and jumped down from the window to follow her love; the day before Puccini left, only the female reporter was in front of him. Came to visit, but never wanted to see each other again. It seems that a 36-year-old painter is happier than a 66-year-old opera composer, maybe, just by looks. They have undoubtedly created works of art that shine through the annals of history, and are irreplaceable greats to us ordinary people. However, as ordinary people, they can't treat their lovers kindly. Who is the artistic inspiration for?

If alcohol and cigarettes are a panacea for creative inspiration, then they are well-deserved. But is it possible that it's just a placebo to curb paranoia? After all, the by-products that come with talent are also an inseparable part of the process of creating classics. The reason why a master is a master comes from those brilliant works, and a genius must be a genius because of paranoia about his life's work. So, they left the most beautiful condensed to the world and became the genius masters in our eyes; but they gave the struggles and unbearableness in life to the lovers around them, so why are they not crazy scumbags in the eyes of the world?
